I have a video of my 2011 pulling after the truck was 3 weeks old, cheap crappy Michelin A/T tires and all. It is really, really quiet. Since then I have pulled this truck over half a dozen times, won 2, finished 2nd twice (once to a balls out Dodge and about the same deal with a 6.4L Ford).
I pull low range obviously and left it in auto, then I've shifted manually. Manual I start in 1st and roll about 2 feet before upshifting, I get to third before ever putting it to the floor. I have gotten into 4th twice, once the track was real sticky so I had to come right back down into 3rd and left it until it spun out; the other time I held 4th until I got down to about 250 feet and then dropped it down to 3rd.
If you are not experienced with pulling I would tell you just put it into Drive and let the truck think for you. If you're fast enough to feel tires spinning and can hear the engine and know when to shift then do it manual.
