The "Check Coolant" message will pop up about every 15,000 miles. It varies a little depending on idle time/towing/hiway miles. So some folks will see it about every 13,000, Some at a longer interval.
The 6.7L uses a new coolant that Ford is gradually moving all engines to around the world. It will become their universal coolant in time. This coolant is not backward compatible with older designed engines. So it's only being used in newly designed engines. ( the coolant will eat the older style gaskets and seals)
The message pops up to remind the owner o check their coolant. This requires a test kit. You will check for Nitrites, Freeze Protection and new test for Reserve Alkalinity. (the first two test can be done with the older style test strips, The last test requires some new vials orange cap or clear cap depending on the coolant color)
Past generation of coolant all had Nitrites, So the test strips where looking for a positive indication, The new Speciality Orange coolant does not have any Nitrites and your test should show Zero for any Nitrites. If you test positive, you need to flush and refill your coolant system. Chances of this testing positive are really low unless somebody added the wrong kind of coolant when topping off the system
If you fail the Corrosion Inhibitor test. You can add the VC-12 Coolant Rejuvinator. 48 oz to the primary system and 20 some odd oz to the secondary coolant system. This adds Carboxylates to your coolant. This is basically a fatty acid that slowly coats all metal parts in the engine and prevents corrosion. You can add this twice during the coolants 105,000 mile life.
Things to remember,
1.You have two coolant systems, The check coolant test need to be performed on BOTH systems.
2. Coolant should be cool, Not hot when the test is done. Don't think you can drive20 miles and have your coolant at operational temps and do the test. Your truck will need to sit and cool off before the test can be done.
3. The test kits contain enough testing materials to do 10 test. They have an expiration date of about 2 years. So most owners will never use up a whole test kit.
4. If you dealer test your truck immediately, He didn't let it cool off. If he shows you one test strip, He didn't test both coolant systems, and he didn't perform all of the test. You need to use two of the old style test strips and two of the carboxylate test strips. So there should be 4 used test strips if he is showing you the results of the test.
Testing the coolant is not new. We did it on the 7.3L and added FW-16 if needed. On the 6.0L and 6.4L we tested and added VC-8 as needed and now with the 6.7L Ford just added a Check Coolant message to command center screen to remind us.
