I know the 6.4s can put on some absolutely staggering power so what have those of you who are putting down 500+ RWHP or towing really heavy been seeing as a weak point in the sterling 10.5 . I only ask because I happen to have a rear end out of an 08 F-350 in my truck because it was the only thing I could find at the wreaking yard that had 3.73s in it . I plan to bring it into the DIFF shop soon and get some 4.30s and a tru-trac put in but I was wondering if I should be looking into axles , hubs, put a truss in , im looking at all this from a towing stand point but high HP sled pulling and diesel drags puts just as much if not more strain on er than heavy towing . All opinions welcome im just looking for opinions :thumb:
Protect the pinion... Traction bars. Pmf or ouo. Ouo for lotsa off road, pmf for towing. Keeps everything aligned and the axle from trying to drive out from underneath you and keeps the pinion housing from pointing north. Plus, you'll like its road manners a lot more.
Trac bars are a must. Also I wouldn't put in a crush sleeve eliminator unless I was doing some heavy comp use and going to be doing gear changes and rebuilds between event. The crush sleeve has a pretty big job to do and serves a major purpose. Just my 0.02
I have had 2 6.4's in here now with broken rear ends, and both were shafts (at the flanges) and neither had bars but were running the HD300 tuning. Both of them had almost the same story. Leaving a stop and trying to get on it. Axle wrapped and snap no more go. The trac bars eliminate that. Honestly I believe that all of the light duty diesel trucks should have tac bars front he factory. They make a HUGE difference in road manners and towing. They are a cheap investment in my opinion on a tuned 6.4. I just ordered my PMF's last week. Cant wait to replace the Tuff country ones I have now. FWIW the Tuff country ones are a very cheap and affordable alternative for people that want bars but don't want to spend the 700+ on the PMF's or OUO.
Edit: Thinking about it now.....that's a great testament to the stock "limited slip" Both of those trucks were towed here because when the axle shafts snapped there was no drive to the other side of the truck to get it down the road. The broken shaft just sat there and spun. Also neither owner though about reaching down and shifting into 4x4 to limp it here:doh:
Where would I get a crush washer eliminator? I plan on doing a locker of some sort.
