Hi Guys,
the Angry hairdryer exhaust note leaves something left to be desired.
I have a 4" pipe all the way to the little stock muffler. Anyone have a way to make it sound a bit meaner?
Thanks,
Go a full 5" with 4" dp and 6.0 manifolds... There is nothing that can really be done about the 6.4 hairdryer sound due to the operation of the turbo. You can also go to a non vgt single... But that starts getting stupid expensive.
Some people have added an aftermarket muffler to a 5" pipe and it helps a little bit. But I don't really see the problem, comparing mine to a 6.0 with 5" and a 5.9 24v with a 5" my truck is just slightly quieter but for the most part once warmed up the hairdryer noise really isn't bad. You will never get the same bark as the older diesels with a 6.4 or 6.7. I will say the 6.4 with a 5" pipe sounds mean as hell when you step on it. I honestly think it is the best sounding diesel when you open it up.
Unfortunately that is the sound of a healthy 6.4... Really, unless you go to a single or non-vgt setup you will never get rid of it completely.
Like I said though, I have a 5" DP back and once the truck is warmed up it sounds great at idle. I get complements from Dodge guys all the time... I have always loved the sound of a turbine or jet engine, spent too much time on the flight line lol. Every time I start my truck in the morning that sound from the turbos makes me smile.
There is a cure for 95% of the sound. I have a 4" dp back pipe. I stuck an MBRP R2009 muffler on it with the "ribs" facing the front. You can barely hear the turbo whine while standing at the end of the pipe. It has a nice deep rumble at idle, nd sounds like an old big block with a thrush on it.
I have come across a few 6.4's with mufflers and none sound much different than mine. That isn't to say they don't work... I have never noticed much at idle with them, but at wot it cuts quite a bit of turbo noise. I am partial to the noise of a straight piped 6.4, so no matter what you say... It won't make me happy lol. I love the noise these trucks make, if I didn't I would have already thrown an h&s single on her.
Honestly, the only way to make the truck sound the way you want (typical diesel) is to run a single, non VGT turbo. A muffler will sorta muffle it, but it will still be there. That being said, I get nothing but compliments from anyone that hears my truck. Ask anyone who runs a straight piped 6.4, the have more bark than a 6.6 dura****. And they actually sound like a motor that isn't going to rattle apart like a cummins....
yeah I don't mind the idle sound with the compound turbo setup.
But I get what the OP is saying.
My old man's 7.3 has more of a rumble and whistle at idle. Rather than just sounding like a harrier jet.
Yeah, the harrier sound is cool, but I live in a neighborhood and head out daily at 4am. I also tow all day, with some in the city. I got a few looks from the 5-0 when I was straight piped. I let a 5-0 friend drive it (who has a straight-piped 7.3) and I could hear him go down the street, around the corner, up 5 blocks, and out onto the main road a mile away. He said most of his co-workers would be cool with it but I'd prolly run across the dirtbags that would write me up. Living in a college town means the 5-0 doesn't have a lot of sympathy for anyone.
yeah unless you want to modify the turbo assembly setup to just use 1 single turbo or modify the operation of the VGT compressor like in the video above, you're just gonna have to live with it.
It's just the nature of how the compound turbos operate. They move a lot of air, and in turn make a lot of power.
You are better off having custom tunes made to change how the vanes on the vgt turbo operate at idle. Even then, it will cause some drivability issues (smoke, turbo lag, etc) so you are still better off dealing with the noise.
Agreed, I have gotten use to the jet engine sound.
Thanks,
