I just thought some of you guys would be interested in information on a bypass oil filter setup. I happen to use Amsoil, but there are many on the market. I plan on keeping this truck for a long time, so I decided to install an Amsoil Dual Gard system to keep the oil clean and extend my oil change intervals. I've researched this topic to death and wanted to learn first hand if it's true that this system can extend oil changes or not. I really am sceptical of the Amsoil claims of up to 300K oil change intervals using a bypass filter, so I'm doing a my own test With the use of Blackstone oil analysis I'm going to see what oil works best for me and what oil additives work or don't. I'm using Shell Rotella T 15-40 at the moment and see what results I get. I've used this oil in all my trucks and have had excellent results. With the advent of the newer synthetics I plan on changing over to Shell Synthetic 5W40 T6 in the future. I am running this T6 in another Diesel of mine and so far am impressed. I've just sent an oil sample to Blackstone with 5000KM without any additives to get a baseline for the oil. I also added 16 onces of Archoil 9200 and also started running the fuel additive as well. There are claims that Achoil can double your normal oil change intervals as well as provide excellent added lubrication to the engine. So far 2 items that bothered me have disappeared with the use of Archoil. One is that annoying ticking noise at idle (TSB 08-19-5 6.4L DIESEL ENGINE TICKING / TAPPING NOISE Publication) and the second was a slight occasional miss at idle. Both the ticking and the miss have disappeared. So far I'm impressed with the filters and Archoil, but will follow up with the blackstone results in future to see if they really work or another snake oil scam. Here's a video of the system at work:
Got my oil sample back from BlackStone labs and now have my baseline with a 3000KM sample. This sample is with no additives to the oil. I've since added Archoil 9200 to this and will take another sample in 10,000 KM and see how it's holding up.
Thanks, I'm very happy with the results, I can now relax a little about this 6.4 Hmm now if it would just stop leaking anti-freeze.lol Next on my list is chase my leak. I think it's the water pump at this time, but haven't had the time to spend and really pinpoint it. :dunno:
Yes it has the upgraded hoses. I'll have a good look at it when I can get more time with the truck (at moment back in Hong Kong). It's dripping off the water pump from one of the bolts that attaches it to the front cover. I bought a vacuum coolant tool so I can put some vacuum on the system and see if any air is getting in. The leak is intermittent and only does it when the engine is cold, leading me to believe it's the hoses, but until I spend some time looking at it I won't know for sure. To me it's all fun as I love wrenching and trouble shooting Hmm maybe I'll be buying a lift sooner that later.lol I hate they way they stuffed this engine into that engine bay:look:
Hi, I bought the kit from Amsoil. AMSOIL - Synthetic Oil, Motor and Engine Oil, Lubricants, Air Filters, Oil Filters and Greases look under filters and then click on the bypass filters. From there you can find the different bypass filters offered, including the Dual Gard. Sorry I can't link it as on an I-pad and that doesn't seem to copy and paste the links. Hope this helps
TY, I actually found a site that sells the kit complete too. Then found it on Ebay with the updated oil fill cap that has the neck to deposit the oil back down the fill tube, so it doesn't interfere with the CCV.
Yes you want the return cap that has the extended tube added to it. I bought those from Nuc Motor Sports as both the oil supply cap and return were a lot cheaper than Amsoil. The only problem with the Nuc return cap was it never had the added neck, so I hod to tap it for that and added my own extension tube.
Just an update to this thread for those of you that might be looking at the Dual Gard System. It comes with a restrictor that is .094" which I have been using up until now with no trouble at all, Idle oil pressure is 36 psi and cruising is 50 + as my sender unit is only 50 psi. I posted this on Bob's the oil site and someone mentioned that the restrictor is way too big, so I did some research as well as emailed Amsoil and they too said that for the Powerstroke they recommend a restrictor of .032". So I decided to cut some disks on my lathe and make a .032" and .045". I'll try the .032" first and see how it flow's and if I don't like it I'll go up to the .045". Here's some pictures:
