Looking to buy a 6.4 in the next month or so. I'm a diesel mechanic and plan on doing the deletes, studs, tune for the first phase. Eventually complete engine build. Is there anything I should avoid or things to specifically look for when shopping? I will be taking oil samples before pulling the trigger, what is allowable fuel dilution?
They aren't easy trucks to shop for, but if you do enough research and learn as much as you can they aren't bad trucks my any means. They aren't as hard to shop for as a 6.0... A 6.4 generally won't hide its problems quite as well as a 6.0 will. Once a 6.4 has an issue things get worse very quickly.
Do everything that drew said, always look for maintenance records. Flip though the owners manual and see if any notes were written. I had receipts and dealer maintenance noted written in mine when I picked it up. Obviously you really want to get a good monitor on her for the test drive. If you can get your hands on an Edge insight, scan guageII, or an IDS do it... The best way to see what the truck is doing and its overall health is to monitor it.
Once all said and done, the 6.4 is a VERY good truck. They are also very expensive. If you don't keep it maintained it WILL break. If something starts acting up and you don't fix it right then and there you will usually cook the motor. Until the motor is built, and you can keep back pressure and egt's in order drive sensibly. This truck is a perfect example for the saying, "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should."
