Powerstroke 6.4 Help - Newbie

OK guys I just purchased an 08 F250 crew cab. I have owned a cummins for 16 yrs and just needed the room for the kids. I am in limbo as to this engine though. I have heard happy customers and not happy about 50/50. I only got 13mpg according to the dash driving home last night. I am a family guy not having a ton of money to invest in aftermarket parts. I would like to know if there is any reasonable priced improvement for fuel economy or is this just the way it is. Was thinking of buying and 5yr, 100,000 mile warranty from Esurance for $3000. Probably emissions tinkering will not be allowed right? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

First off, congrats on the purchase! I love my CCSB 6.4. Has has both the EGR and DPF Deleted since the first week she was in my driveway. 13MPG according to the dash ins't bad. The 6.4's aren't known for fuel economy especially with all the emissions stuff in place. If you set aside that $3000 you were planning to spend on the warranty and use it on EGR and DPF Delete pipes and a programmer you or your truck will be happier. There are a ton of threads on here about how the DPF will kill the motor over time. But if you got with the warranty and something happens, your warranty will probably be void.

Just get a tuner that delete all the emissions crap and tune just for that reason (not jacking the power up) and drive easy , your mileage should be better. Thats what I did and I average 16 mixed city/hwy.

H&S tuned. B&W gooseneck hitch with Companion 5th wheel. Helwig rear sway bar. Edge CTS monitor. Dieselsite coolant filter. Rancho 9000 shocks. Airlift 5000 air bags with onboard compressor. Viair onboard air with 5 gal tank. Flo-pro stainless 4 in. exhaust.
