Sell My 2008 F-350: Trade in or Sell Myself

I am going to sell my 2008 F-350 6.4 truck and I am looking at a 2013 F-250. Is the difference in money worth the hasel of getting a good payment from the buyer and waiting for them to get the money together as compaired to trading mine in to the dealer?

Does your truck have all it's emissions equipment present? Most dealers won't take a trade if it doesn't have it, or will know serious money off because they'll have to replace it before they sell it.

Just because a dealer offers you what seems like good money on your trade, it might be because they're not taking as much off the new truck as they could. One way or another they'll do their best to get as much of your money as possible.

On the other hand, it can take weeks to get financing arranged for a private sale. If you've got the time, I'd say try to sell it yourself first.

Another thing to consider is when you trade in a vehicle, whatever they give you in credit is money you don't have to pay tax on. If you trade in your truck for $30,000 on a 52,000 you'll only pay tax on $22,000 of it. It could be a better deal to trade in the truck for 28 versus selling it outright for 30 depending on the tax rate.

You will always lose on a trade in but if the ease of doing that makes it worth it go for it....

I wish I had the money to not deal with private sellers

Thanks for the ideas. I agree that sometimes it is easy to just trade it in and not deal with people kicking tires and trying to steel it from you. I might advertise for a short time before I trade to see what I am offered. The truck looks like new and runs great. Thanks again.
