2008 F250 Tailgate Assist Spring?

Something snapped in my tailgate, sounded like a spring broke. Now the tailgate is very heavy to close. Any ideas on what broke and what the fix is?

There is a torsion rod that runs from pivot point to pivot point on each side of the tailgate. This rod pre-loads the tailgate and makes it easy to close or open. Your torsion rod has likely broken and needs to be replaced.
