It's likely in the shifter handle itself.
The older trucks used to rub the wires through at the bottom of the shifter. I've changed a couple of the late model shift handles, but the wiring or switch must have been defective in the lever itself, since there was no visible damage to the wiring that is exposed.
Get the wiring diagram and you will need to momentarily jumper the wiring at the column side of the harness to ensure that the circuit integrity is still there from the column to the PCM. Hope this helps.
