6.4 air intake question

I was cleaning my stock air filter before I find a new non stock filter to replace it. I was checking to see what the tube that comes out of the filter cover does. It seems to run toward the center on the firewall then attaches to a plastic intake over the turbo area. I can see how this might assist in cold start up but the rest of the time it must just feed hot air into the intake.
Has anyone removed this tube or does it have a purpose I am to dumb to figure out?

Tucker

wonder the same thing

The rubber tube coming out of the top of the breather assy bends and goes to the middle of the engine compartment where it has a vacuum cleaner tip type opening. Mine sits on the engine loose. I'm guessing it sucks in the hot air off the engine. It looks like it would suck up a bunch of road grime coming up from the bottom of the engine from the turbulence.

im assuming you are talking about a crank case ventilator? coming from the valve cover to the air intake? i dont have a 6.4 but that's what it's sounding like to me. if that's what you are talking about then you can bypass the hot air and run it to the ground. i dont know what the 6.4 looks like but if you were to run it to the ground you need to run your hose upward and over something so you minimize the oil that gets discharged. at least you can on the 6.0. i was having a hard time with getting oil in my intake and blowing the intercooler line apart so i hooked up a racor filter inline to filter out the oil. i ran a hose up and over the brake booster and to the ground while i was waiting on the racor to arrive. it works out pretty good now and i haven't blown a intercooler line since. hope this is what you are talking about, it should be unless there is something new on the 6.4.

DV8R, The line does not connect to anything, it just sits above the turbo area at the back of the motor.
