Long vs Short block

So I will probably get some sh!t for this question but what is the difference between a long and a short block? Myself and my buddies still cant figure it out and its starting to bug me that I know a lot of stuff about 6.4s but not the difference between the long and short blocks so please help me out! Is one better then the other what?
