Finally got my truck last month. Picked up an 08 F350 Lariat CC DRW 2WD. This my first diesel and was wondering how much diesel "chatter" should I expect. I thought the 6.4 was suppose to be quiet compared to other diesels. I test drove the 08 and some earlier models. There are times it seems to be quiet and there are times when it seems the vavles are about to come out of the engine. Is this normal? Will it get better with miles?

The engine isn't all that quiet but the cab makes the difference. It's real quiet with the windows up. I will get really load when in regeneration. You will here all kinds of noises and the turbos whining when you shut it off. Scary the first couple of times

I have a friend that has an 08 F250, and his sounded a lot quieter than mine did when stock, when idling.

Diesel chatter and turbo noise ...is a good sound !
(Also helps keep inattentive pedestrians from wandering in front of you in parking lots. Way too much paperwork when that happens) |

My '08 6.4 PSD sounds pretty quiet to me. Can't hear it at all with my windows up...then again my race car may be making me deaf.

Fuel quality
Not all ULSD fuel is equal. I can fill up at the Horizon gas station and my truck seems to run fine and not be loud. I fill up at Mapco and I've got chatter. I use the Motorcraft Cetane boost to help keep the dumbed down diesel from making my engine loud.

I wonder if the stations that say they are ULSD are not, or if so how long did they mix the ULSD with reg. diesel fuel until it can be 100 % ULSD? I believe that this is the cause of my DPF's early giving up on me at 73,000 miles.Since I have had my truck since March 07 when ULSD was just getting around to stations at all. I am sure that I have gotten some "mixed" fuel at some point early in the life of the truck. Just wondering if any knows if this may be true, just a thought. But with the KEM I can run off road fuel if I wanted too -- its sooooo nice not to have to pick and choose what stations I have to stop at.
