looking to get a 6.4

hi ok so a budy of mine is looking to purchase a 2008 and up 6.4 i dont know much about the 6.4 as i have a 2006 6.0. are there any issues with the 6.4 like the 6.0 have? im going with him in a few days to look at a couple trucks is there anything to pay special attention to? thank you in advance for any help

Be sure to look at the rear main seal area for evidence of oil. You can also tell if it's been wiped off recently. It could be something simple to fix or something well out of the scope of your ability to fix and really expensive (unless you are a diesel tech).

Check for receipts of maintenance. Find out if it's been tuned, if not, check the tail pipe for soot (evidence of tuning). Drive it with no shifting or tranny issues, no wheel slop or play. Actually drive it for as long as you can, offer to put some fuel in it, and then drive it back.

I can't think of anything else glaring that wouldn't already present itself while driving.

thanks for the responces cant delete becouse of emissions testing. Are there any problems with the emissions stuff?

Honestly, I wouldn't buy a 6.4L if you don't plan to delete. The emissions equipment on these trucks can cause some major issues.

Well.. Idk about that, you'd need to delete the egr, then you have possible head gasket and head damage at any given moment. So you'd want to find a 6.0 that's been studded md bullet proofed. Can you get away with an egr delete? You could enable it for emission testing and just disable it afterwards with a tuner

the 6.4 is not for me its for a buddy. i have a 2006 6.0 that been running great ive had the egr cooler and oil cooler replaced but its been a great truck for the last 6years ive owened it but i know of the headache it can be but because of emission testing theres not much we can do

I would go for a 6.0L if it was studded and had a bulletproof EGR cooler. Otherwise, I'd be looking at a 6.7L or a gasser.
