6.4 EGR Questions
This is one is probably going to be for the techs, but if any one has a thought please post.......I've been reading a lot on the 7.3 and 6.0 and the EGRs with both trucks. I have learned that its something you need to keep your eye on and clean...so here are my questions.... is the EGR something that needs to be looked more often if you have your DPF on? Should I worry about it getting clogged as fast since I not longer have a DPF? When should I take it out to look at it or clean it? Thanks guys....

I didn't know the 7.3 had an egr system...

i dont beleive the 7.3 has one. but i would think that the system on the 6.4 is prolly the same as the 6.0 and i would prolly check every so often just so you have an idea of how dirty it is before it starts to cause problems. but i dont no how hard it is to get to.

i dont believe the 7.3 has an EGR. only the 6.0 and 6.4.

You need to check with KEM to see if your EGR is disabled by the programming. If they are running an off-road program then most likely the EGR is not functioning and won't be an issue. I haven't heard of 6.4 EGR problems like the 6.0 has. That doesn't mean that it doesn't exist, just that we're not hearing about them yet.
Maybe Scott, Jon or Marc will see this and chime in. |

the 6.4 is a completely different egr design than the 6.0 ,and is not supposed to give the problem the 6.o did , really not enough with the mileage on them yet to tell if there gonna give problems or not , so far so good

The 6.4 requires a special puller to remove the egr valve as well. Damage to the valve can result if any other methods are used. The egr valve uses a diesel oxidation catalyst (you can see it on top of the engine, behind the turbo) to dry out the exhaust before it gets to the coolers and the valve. There is temperature sensors before and after each of the coolers to monitor egr cooler efficiency. Because yours has been modified (dpf removed) I dont know how well the system is working.
