Help with 6.4 info
About a 1 1/2 year ago I dumped my beautiful 05 6.0 in favor of a beautiful lifted new body style gas Chevy. I am thinking about coming back to Diesel. I have always loved the 08-10 Ford F450 dually. The price is finally getting in the affordable range. I am unfamilar with the 6.4's except for my buddy that constanatly complains about his fuel mileage. Is there anything I should be concerned about? I really want somethin reliable. It would be a 3rd vehicle so would not be daily driven. I would be buying one with no more tham 65k on it.....

OUCH, giving up a perfectly GOOD FORD for a Chebby, Man that is like giving up your best huntin dog & gettin a Poodle!!!
I have an 08 that is a 3rd vehicle, I use it for hauling a 3700# truck camper & my fishing boat. I didn't do much research on this subject (MPG's) but was thinking that if I got a newer diesel things would be cool, but Alas, I made the mistake of jumping into an 08. I had no visions of having to chip it or do any Mods to it at all, I just wanted a good stock truck (not a swamp rocket or trailer Queen). Don't get me wrong I like the looks, the ihterior & it's got TONS of power but the MPG's sucks big time (11.6 most times) but unless I want to spend $$$$ for a DPF & EGR delete, tuner & a slew of other Mods for improvement (crappy emmisions is the culprit), the mileage is not going to get any better. I might as well have named it "BOAT" (break out another thousand)!!!!! In fact that's what I'm gonna do, Honey lets take the Boat!!! Good luck with your search. The emissions equipment seems to work fairly well as long as the truck is being worked hard or at least highway driven. Stop & go traffic seems to be the main culprit of emissions equipment failure in my opinion. Well at least the dpf problems happen in these conditions.

I had the same problem outta my 2010.. Getting 11-12 mpg highway.. I went ahead and bit the bullet and did the dpf/cat delete, afe cold air intake and spartan tuner.. That ran right around $2900 but my fuel mileage went to 25 highway and 19 city running the 250 tune. I have a led food problem though so I'm puttin a new transmission and new torque converter in it as well. But the spartan is the best out there for a 6.4 in my opinion.. The tuner has low tunes as well (stock and 40hp) if you're just interested in fuel mileage

on a f450 youll have lower gears. cavitation is an issue so you have to have your oil analyzed every so often. another commom issue is the radiator.
if you change oil often and manage your fuel system it should last you. run an oasis report to find the vehicles history. if you dont tune it get some gauges at least. the coolant should be prpperly flushed and replaced with cat ec1. ford was still using the gold crap in the 64s. |
