Can I leave the heat shield off my turbos?

I mangled my heat shield that covers my turbos while installing my new down pipe. Any ill effects of leaving it off?

i took mine out to when i installed my downpipe. 20 000kms later no problems

My first thought is that it may act as an insulator, similar to pad found under many hoods. It could be possible that it keep temps from fluctuating too quickly. I would prob try and fix the one that you mangled or acquire another. Just my $.02
