Bet start while under warranty

I got a 2010 f-250 and I have been having intermittent smoke and it has shut down a couple times. Of course ford says they don't know what's wrong. I want to know maybe what is the best start to getting better power and milage while Maintaining warranty. From what I read so far getting rid of the DPF will solve my problems with the smoke. Also how important is it to to an egr delete to the system when doing mods? It's a lot of questions but would appreciate the help.
