Tranny Strength

Hey all,
I was just wondering how strong our trannys are. I have a buddy that has a new duramax with a programmer. He pulls a big cattle trailer with the tow tune and is already slipping the tranny on the thing and he has only had it like 2 months. Just wondering if anyone is having an issue with their tranny while running a tune. I mainly am goin to be running a tune for the mpg but i just dont want to have any tranny issues.
thanks,
Chase

what kind of tranny do you have? Is it a 4R for a 7.3L or a 5R for the 6.0?

IMO the torqueshift is the best tranny out there. I've put a lot of power through mine and no trouble yet. There are a lot of guys like me who've thrown well in excess of 400hp at them without breaking. the older 7.3's with the 4 sp. auto had more concerns tranny wise, but the newer torque shift is really a great tranny. Not too many of them going bad around here. The key to making them last with high HP is proper tuning...

I don't think you have much to worry about. My '04 with a Torqueshift had just over 90K miles on it and was running a tune on it and towing and never had a single trans issue...just head gaskets.

We had trouble with a 2005 that was programmed. It started locking up while trying to pull out. You could put it in N and then back into drive and it was fine. Ford said it had no trouble and never attempted to fix it. We traded it shortly afterwards. The 04 we had acted strange when shifting while under a slight load. It would shake the truck a little. The dealer blamed the tuner. It never did go out. The new 6.4 is all stock and the tranny has worked perfectly so far.

By chance was it a Diablo tuner? I had one on mine for a few months and it didn't feel right shifting so I ended up removing it.

Ford does carry the strongest tranny's IMO. Depending on yer Tuners, it could addy to problems. I like a good tuner you can change your own shifting patterns. On the fly is a BIGGIE for me!!

The 04 had an Edge Lightning I think and the last had 2. The first was a Superchips and the last was an Edge Juice.

I know some people who had some problems on the first Duramax trucks hauling dozers. Not sure what the upgrades have been to that transmission.

I saw some tranny problems with older Ford 7.3 not sure what transmission they had back in 99, 2000 but all of our problems were heat related. Usually the front seal would go out and burn up some parts in the transmissions. Our mechanic could usually get one going for $400 in parts if it was severely damaged.

Dirty radiators where 90% of the problem. Running heavy on the beach was a lot of trouble as well.
