I do mine atleast every 5k miles or if I have to do any work in or under the engine bay. It's better if the engine is cool, but I've done mine after letting it sit for only 15-20 min. I dont use the soap or any chemicals, just hot water... been doing it this way since day 1 and 150k miles later no issues. The one thing I do before I start is give everything a quick once over to make sure all the covers are on tight and caps are properly sealed so no water gets into a place where it should not be.

Another thing is too dont get too close with the wand. Some washers put out some pretty good pressure and you dont want to break anything or blow things apart. lol. I do mine so often just because I'm constantly in the mud or off road so it gets dirty pretty quick.
