warranty coverage with a programmer/chip

good morning. i did a search but didn't find anything.

a friend of mine has recently purchased a 2008, crew cab 4x4. he's looking to enhance the performance for mileage and towing. he was told by a friend of his, "if ford finds out you changed the computer, the warranty will be voided".

i told him i'd ask here.

does the computer store the programmer/chip information? what about intake and exhaust?

any input or experience is appreciated.

the 6.4's are a truly different breed when it comes to what they remember and store for the Tech's to download if there are problems...

I don't know for sure and you will probably want to wait for one of the Tech's in here to answer -- but I think they will definately know that you did something to it even if he removes the items before taking it in for work..

The warranty will be voided if the problem is caused by the programmer.

If you have an unrelated problem such as your power windows stop working as an example the warranty is still good on that.

As far as I've heard, the Jury is still out on the Tell-tell system in the '08's to see if you programmed the truck. I heard rumor that there is a way for the techs to see if it's been reprogammed in the last 72 hrs of operation...or something like that. SO, if you have a programmer and something goes wrong, put it back to stock and wait a week or two before going into the dealer...just make sure you leave it running a lot and drive like 5 hrs a day!!! LOL. I'm sure Andy will pop in here sometime.

In all reality, the dealer has to PROVE that the modification you did caused the problem. Putting on post-DPF stacks is not going to cause the rearend to explode...as an example...and it isn't going to cause the REGEN process to goof up. They have to prove it. Specualtion is not going to void it.

the only other thing to go with that is that they can fight you to try to void it or not complete the repair until you complete arbitration - which could take months... although you'd probably win b/c there would be nearly no way to prove you caused the failure...

Just don't talk about programmers with the dealers at all. Just take the truck in for service and if there is a warranty issue just take the truck in unprogrammed and deny that you had a programmer. Just don't be suspicious.

Yes there is a specific code that the truck will throw if it has been programmed. I agree with 2005F250, just play dumb to the dealer.....don't ask don't tell

When I first completed my 6.4 training, there was a dtc (p167f--non oem programming detected). I found it in transmission dtcs. For some reason, all reference material now doesn't show it. Popular opinion said it is still there, just not available for tech or dealership level.
