Looking at a 6.4
Im looking at a 2008 F550 dump truck. It has the 6.4L which I know nothing about. Has 53,000 miles on it and is clean as a PIN. All maintenance records and clean Carfax. So Im trying to see if there are any problems with these motors and if mileage is a concern for wear with this specific engine. Any input is helpful.

The 6.4 is a great motor will pull all day and is made to work. Job 1 trucks had some problems so it is best to stay away from them if you can. The main problem was radiator in job 1's. The milage sucks due to the dpf on them. That can be fixed with a dpf delete and tune though. The motor is a solid motor from what I have read here and other places. I bought a Ford 6.4 because of what I learned researching and I love it. Good luck. You may want to have a Ford dealer pull an Oasis report on the vin to show any warranty work or repairs.

I saw the oasis report and the maintenance records as well. It went in for maintenance every 15,000 miles and the full run through each time. However I do hope this was not the only time they changed the oil LOL truck was reposessed and sold at an auction

Can anyone tell me when the cutoff date was for the Job1 trucks? Im also in the market for a 6.4, but based on my research Im gonna try to stay away from the job1 (despite the fact that there are fixes for the problems).

I don't know why everyone is scared of the job 1's. I have a 3/07 truck and it has had 1 radiator replaced with the updated radiator and it is perfect.

Not scared in the least bit, im just a little skeptical of ANY car or truck that is the first in its series to roll from the assembly line. Since I have a choice in the matter, I prefer (but am not limiting myself to) a job2 6.4. I know they began making job2 trucks sometime in the middle of 2007, but was just curious of the actual date. By no means am I knocking on, or scared of a Job1 truck, as its still a very good chance I may get one. Sorry if i stepped on anyones toes... not my intention

1: Radiator 2: Upper radiator hose 3: Charge air cooler 4: Steering Wheel (leather started wearing) 5: Gear shift assembly (Tow/Haul button stopped working) 6: Both outer tie rod ends (did that here recently so it was normal wear I guess) and lastly 7: Digital Air Control (definitely didn't need that replaced) I am currently waiting to have an actuator for the a/c replaced behind the dash because of a weird noise. |

Thank you guys for the information... I really do appreciate it!
I'm definitely trying to do my "homework" on these trucks so that when I find a good deal I can know exactly what I look for and what questions to ask about. You guys know first hand on what some of the issues are, so I'm definitely taking notes. Thanks again for everyones help! |

I also had these issues. I bought the truck(08 job 2) used with 50k on it. I did some research here before the purchase and found the radiator to be leaking. So I had them replace it before i took the truck off the lot. The only thing the 100k mi factory powertrain warranty didnt cover was the upper radiator hose. I also had a nasty powersteering issue, but it went away when they changed the hose. I guess the hose was leaking on the belt, allowing the power steering pump to slip. Atleast thats what im guessing happened. lol
