are ignition keys "chipped"
i tried to get a new ignition key made for my '08 last night and the keymaker said that if she made the key, it would only open the door. she believed the key was "chipped" and couldn't make the key. she said that it's a dealer only item most likely. any truth to that?

unfortunately it's true. Costs over a hundred bucks these days for a key but you get some level of theft deterrent

If you have both of the original keys you can program the new chipped key yourself. If not, you will have to take it to a dealer.

I have both of the original keys that came with my truck. How does one go about programming a new key?
