6.6 MPG Towing 8k, Is this Right? 100% throttle at 70 going up slight grade?
So today i did my first tow with my truck without my spartan on it and I got 6.6 MPG going 70 on realitively flat terrain, there were some hills but nothing major. Also the truck was 100% throttle sometimes going up slight grades at 70.
Does this sound right to anyone? I know the power from Spartan is awesome but I can't imagine that if everyones truck ran like mine today people couldn't tow the 12,15,18k trailers people talk about. My truck is still under warranty so if something doesn't sound right how can i get my local dealer to look at it. Just not sure if what I am describing sounds normal or not. |

Doesn't sound right to me. My truck is stock and I'll get about 10mpg pulling an 8500lb 5th 65-70 mph. Some good hills too, 6-7%. Always had power to spare.

a little more information.
Today i towed my camper to the dealer for some work and put my spartan in so I could monitor what was going on. What i noticed was i was running really high egt's. Normally I didn't get over 1000 degrees unless I was hard on it, today i was getting to 1350 going up slight grades. Could my DPF be bad? Do they sometimes go bad just sitting? Mine was in my shed so not like it was exposed to the elements. |

Were the ends sealed? If not, then crap could've accumulated in it.....

My truck is stock and I would get about 7 or 8 mpg pulling my 10,000lb+ boat at about 70. I too would be full throttle taking slight grades. Have always chalked it up to being normal. Maybe I should have it checked.

08 Job 3 CC 2WD 3.73 rear end here. I just got back from our two week vacation pulling our 11,500 fifth wheel.
Handcalculated 10.8 with a regen at 65 mph Handcalculated 11.7 without a regen at 65 mph. So I "lost" 1 mpg because of the regen, which equals to 30 miles per tank. 30 miles/10.8 mpg = 2.77 gallons of fuel "lost" I also noticed on the two previous fill ups, the fuel gauge did not move off of FULL until around 70 miles on the odometer. Right after I filled up the third time ( 11.8 mpg in the above calc's) I went into regen as soon as I hit the highway ( within 1 mile of gas station). The Fuel gauge came off FULL at 38-40 mile. Again a loss of 30 miles on the regen or roughly 2.5-3.0 gallons of fuel. That is alot of fuel wasted per tank. This is pretty consistent MPG when pulling my fiver. It is always around 10.6-10.9 at 65 mph. I only have 7,000 miles on the truck so hopefully it will get better with more miles and when the factory warranty is up in 2012, a new exhaust with tuner. |
