Got my answer from another web site, Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums. I take it no one has ever shifted into 3rd on the fly on this site. This is what I was hunting for.

3rd good to 40 mph
2nd good to 25 mph
1st good to 40 mph

That site sucks. You will get ban for anything. Especially if you are a diesel guy.

the tranny will only downshift when it is able to.
you can be going 100mph and pull the shift lever to 1st.
It wont shift direct to 1, it will cycle through the gears without overspeeding the engine.
