6.4L Heads Cracking
Anyone hear of this? I was on another forum last night, and read that this is a common issue with 6.4 Heads. One shop on the forum said every head they had pulled off a 6.4L had cracked heads, even with low miles.
Just curious. Added the link to what I was reading. http://powerstrokenation.com/forums/...ad.php?t=58641 Last edited by j21black; 06-04-2010 at 09:10 AM. Reason: Added Link |

This is the first I've heard of it also. After reading every post on that thread I suspect that most of the heads that these guys have seen have been off of high hp tuned (performance use) trucks.
You ask why? 1. This thread is really about a diesel performance competition. (which could mean nothing by itself, but in context of it all...) 2. The techs and machinists seem to be working at performance shops. 3. No dealer techs have responded that I'm aware of. (which most of us with stock trucks are going to the dealer when issues arise because it will be covered under warranty, but if you have a tuned truck (thats used for performance/drag strips), that has problems.... you'll probably be off to the performance shop instead) Yes, I know that some have said that they saw cracked heads on stock trucks, but I still wonder............... That's what I've gathered from that thread. Now, I could be barking up the wrong tree. All of the techs I know work at a dealer and I can't remember any of them ever talking about a cracked head problem on the 6.4. Hopefully some of the techs on this board will jump in and educate us. If this is a common problem what should we be looking for? Last edited by Front Runner; 06-04-2010 at 10:25 AM. |

Front Runner -You could be correct. I understand the content of the thread, but there is a lot of talked of cracked heads on stock/tuned trucks in the first 4 pages.
The thing that concerns me, is there was a post or two in there about seeing it on non-tuned trucks. Rudy's Diesel Performance - It could be stock trucks looking to be tuned, or trucks already tuned, I am not sure - Stated that every head they have pulled off a 6.4 had been cracked - That worries me a bit. |

There have been cases of head issues on stock trucks. No where near what the 6.0 had.
"Tuned" trucks.. well, if you play.. you need to be able to pay. |

All of the heads we pull have some cracks in them. Some are bad enough to need replacing, but some are fine to surface and run. You have to look at every crack to see where it is and how bad it is. 99% of the cracks are useable.
