VIN Number indicate gearing on a F-450 ???

I did a search and could not find it...

On the tag after the VIN it says FO373, it could not be 373 gears.... Being a 450 I was thinking 430 gears... Must just be coinsidence...

The gearing isn't indicated on the vin.
Lok at the tag on the rear diff.

IDENTIFICATION CODES

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a 17-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped on a metal tab riveted to the instrument panel, top upper left of the dash. The VIN number is also found on the Vehicle Certification (VC) label.

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)


The first three vehicle identification number (VIN) positions are the world manufacturer code.

* 1FD - Ford Motor Company, USA, incomplete vehicle
* 1FM - Ford Motor Company, USA, multi-purpose vehicle
* 1FT - Ford Motor Company, USA, truck, completed vehicle
* 2FM - Ford Motor Company, Canada, multi-purpose vehicle
* 3FD - Ford Motor Company, Mexico, incomplete vehicle

Brake Type And Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)


The fourth VIN position is the vehicle brake type and GVWR code (all vehicles use hydraulic brakes).

* N - 8,501-9,000 pounds GVWR with driver and front passenger air bags
* S - 9,001-10,000 pounds GVWR with driver and front passenger air bags
* W - 10,001-14,000 pounds GVWR with driver and front passenger air bags
* X - 14,001-16,000 pounds GVWR with driver and front passenger air bags
* A - 16,001-19,500 pounds GVWR with driver and front passenger air bags
* H - 8,501-9,000 pounds GVWR, without air bags (Mexico)
* J - 9,000-10,000 pounds GVWR, without air bags (Mexico)
* K - 10,001-14,000 pounds GVWR, without air bags (Mexico)

Engine Code


The eighth VIN position is the engine displacement and number of cylinders.

* L - 5.4L, Modular, SOHC, EFI, V8, Gas
* S - 6.8L, SOHC, EFI, V10, Gas
* F - 7.3L, OHV, DI Turbo, V8, Diesel
* Z - 6.8L, gaseous fuel prep (F-Series)
* D - 6.8L, propane only (F-Series)
* B - 5.4L, propane only (F-Series)

Check Digit Code



Model Year Code


The tenth VIN position is the model year code.

* 2 - 2002

Assembly Plant Code


The eleventh VIN position is the assembly plant code.

* S - Allen Park (Allen Park, Michigan)
* E - Kentucky Truck (Jefferson County, Kentucky)
* M - Cuautitlan (Cuautitlan, Mexico)

Sequential Build Code


The last six VIN positions are an alphanumeric code for the vehicle build sequence. This is also the vehicle serial and warranty number.

* A0000-E99999 - Ford Division

I know that doesn't answer your question exactly, but I wanted to get that info up anyway of what the vin does mean

Just seeing if it was... Truck is 2200 kms away, but on the 18 pictures there is one on the VIN Sticker.... Thank you...

it is more than likely 4.30 i haven't seen many 450s with the 4.88 that didn't come out a chassis cab models. but you might have some one look at the door plate that gives the axle weights and it may tell you and also if it has a GCVW bigger than 33,000 lbs it may have 4.88s

I'm assuming you only have the SN and don't have access to the truck yet (at least with out a long drive)

Don't know if this will work for Australia but it is worth a shot, just put the VIN in place of the one that is there in your browsers address box and the original window sticker will (hopefully) pop up:

The VIN I used as an example was the last F-450 we bought, Lone Ranger just needs to (hopefully) paste in the VIN of the truck he is looking at.
