Mike, what is the part number on the bill for your filter? Thanks!

Edit: this is an 08+ right??

zerocool, i crawled under the truck today in the light, and followed my lines. I would guess from your truck to mine they switched the internal filter only. So we need to stop calling it a job 1 external filter, and perhaps call it an early build external? As my job 1 doesn't have it.

So what does this valve body look like with the pan off, I dont remember seeing any place for a filter in mine. Why would they leave a spot for a filter and not install the filter? And if it was there why not just add the filter in the houseing thats already there and do a new pan and leave the lines alone? I must be missing something here or the valvebodies in the early 08s are diff from the rest.

Yeah, not confused about your truck. Saw the photo you posted. It's a good thing that got straightened out before you bought all the parts.

Everything I've read says its either the external (under the bellhousing) with internal screen, OR an internal true-filter with bigger pan. Ford literature has it listed as "early build" trucks for the external. So you're right, not all job1's.

The confusion is where wontonrunner is saying he has an external "toilet paper" style that costs $30 on a 2008+ truck. Trying to get him to crawl under and look.

The torqshift valve body is supposedly the same since 2005. So the "early build" units with the external, and the later builds with the internal have the same thing under the pan. They put the external on the early builds (tapped in-line to the trans fluid cooler) and then realized it was costly for that filter AND didn't filter as much. They switched back to the in pan style to save on user costs (so I read in a Ford doc), realizing the mistake, I guess.

I sent a PM to the guy who did the swap, asking the valve body question and what the filter actually mounts to, but keep in mind... under the pan, they're all the same, so why wouldn't it work with just a new pan?

I would appreciate that if its not too much trouble!

I posted this in the other thread, but in case people end up here from a search or something and don't see it over there, this is to clear up any misinformation:

Setup 1: EARLY BUILD Job1 trucks.

Filter located under the bellhousing. NOT TOILET PAPER STYLE. It is a black steel canister with 4 ATF lines going into it... 2 on each side. Requires special tool to disconnect 2 passenger side lines. Regular wrench for the 2 lines on the other side. Filter costs between $70-150, hard to find. Nothing in the pan but a screen. (Replacement early build external filter is part number FT176 or Ford 7C3Z-7B155-B)

Setup 2: All other trucks

Filter is IN the pan and is a true filter. Not a screen. (Replacement filter is part number FT180 or Ford 8C3Z-7A098-D) Cost, around $25-40.

To determine which type you have, crawl under and look for the black canister under the bellhousing with 4 atf lines. If it is not there, you do not have an external.
If you do not have an external, your transmission pan should have "SERVICE INTERNAL FILTER PER MAINTENANCE GUIDE" stamped on it.

Zero One Yes it is a 08-6.4 build date 01/07. On the bill it says something about a core charge discount but not an amount. I have the same filter as in your photos with the four lines. When I saw the bill I asked if they changed that filter and they said they did. Iam going to do the pan and filter up grade as a littel insurance.
