Going to go look at an 08. 66k miles, crew cab lariet. I'm going to take my usb plug in and use torque to check for things. Besides oil/coolant delta what else do i need to be looking for? The 6.0 i know inside and out, 6.4 not so much. What's key things to be checking out?
Drive it hard, a couple of WOT runs and check for degas issues like a 6.0. Also look at the drivers side lower corner of the radiator to see if it has the 6.4 coolant leak issue. Look at the upper and lower radiator hoses where they connect to the timing cover. They should have white ends on them. If not they need to be updated. Same with the de-gas bottle. It should either have 1 port with a hose attached or 2 ports but the upper is capped off. Also from underneath look up at the belt tensioner and look to see if it is flexed out and needs to be replaced or not.
Those are all the common issues and fairly easy to do if they haven't been done anyway. Other then Delta there isn't much to look at on a 6.4 besides codes. P0088 or a P0087 can be big red flag codes. You could also remove the upper fuel filter cap and see if there is metal shavings in the bottom of the housing. If there is walk away. Needs a fuel system.
10 4, thanks man. Bone stock truck. This lot only deals in high end stuff, no junk. I was expecting a way higher price tag just because of their rep. Heck, the stock 2014 sitting next to it is priced at 53k!
If i had to guess, that few miles no updates have been done, that may give me some leverage.
Scratch that. Dude offered me 13k for mine, uhhh no... guess I'm staying in the 6.0 game unless i can sell it myself.
Tried telling me he'd sell it in the upper teens IF he could sell it. Told him "i know you had an 06 on the lot 6 months ago, under 100k miles, studded and exhaust asking over 30k". Told him thanks for your time but that wasn't worth it for me. Never even opened the door to the 08 lol
This is really helping me as I'm looking at a 2008 right now. I'm having a hard time justifying getting rid of my 2002 with the 7.3 and 56,000 miles. Its a rock solid truck and very dependable. The problem is, mine's a Super cab and its getting tight for my daughter in the back seat. The 2008 is a Crew Cab Harley Edition with 66K miles and has a H&S tuner in it. It was in a roll over accident 2 years ago, (salvage title) but has been repaired well. (it appears so anyway) He's asking $26,000. Is that fair?
OP, just for comparison, what is your guy asking for his truck?
Also, I'm reading about checking Delta. What is that?
If it is a salvage title and especially if it was rolled I'd run not walk away! The roofs arent strong enough to begin with so restraightening or cutting and welding a new one on makes it even more of a hazard- not worth risking your life over.
I'd get a cheaper 6.0 and throw some money at it. I'm scared of those 6.4s. Only in production for 2 years and too many ways to have a catastrophic failure. IMHO
delta is the temperature differential. in this case, between oil and coolant, at operating temp.
honestly, when it comes to these trucks, if you're serious about one in perticular, i would highly advise you guys to spend the couple hundred on having it looked through thoroughly by a shop that works on powerstrokes as a majority. these 6.4's can be a master of disguise. and many of the repairs are very very costly. mainly due to extensive book times. that couple hundred could save you thousands. also give you a nice little bargaining chip.
don't get me wrong, the 6.4 is a beast. far surpassing technology and engineering of its predecessors. you just have to be extra careful when purchasing and then where you get your service done after.
Thanks for explaining that to me. What kind of difference should there be at operating temperature. I'm not sure if I can locate a reliable Tech to check it out in Denver Colorado. I'm in West Virginia. That's a long test drive coming home isn't it?
The cab and bed were replaced. I checked it out and found that it was a side swipe accident on the drivers side without airbag deployment. I'm guessing that the front end needed some work too.
I'll look it over when I fly out there.
r.j. roll under the truck, about under the drivers door, check thedrain on the fuel filter, open the small yellow vavle.fuel should run out very freely if it does, let it run for about 15 seconds. if itdoesent trouble man. also, after the engine is at normal operating temp leave it running and remove the oil fill cap.the cap should sit there with no movement, if it trys to blow off, fly back home. just saying hate to see someone get burned. these are powerful motors but can have very expensive repairs, without any warranty. good luck!
@RJC2 save yourself some money and stay home and enjoy your 7.3 IMHO since yours has such low mileage you may be able to swap for a crew cab 7.3 or a later 6.0 :dunno:
Having an extended cab is getting tight for my daughter and I've been looking for a Crew. Finding a good, unbeaten 7.3 is really tough. I've had a 6.4 before and I liked it. I know that they're not 7.3 reliable, nothing really is but maybe a Cummins, but then you have a substandard truck to deal with, but I digress.
I'm trying to get my ducks in a row with what to look for when I fly to Denver to look at it. It'll be a long drive home. 1600 miles.
