Tranny fluid/filter change

Going to change my tranny fluid and filter tomorrow...Any tips or tricks before I get started (changed it in other vehicles, just want to know if there is anything particular to our tranny). Also, is there any place cheaper than the dealership to buy the fluid (Motorcraft)? Wal Mart and Autozone do not carry it, and I am pretty sure Napa, etc. do either.

Oreilly's auto parts. 3.39 per litre for motorcraft mercon sp.

It is the cheapest you will find it. I drove 1000km's round trip to get it in minot at that price. Even after fuel it was still cheaper than buying it locally.

^^^ what he said. They don't keep it on hand (at least at my store), so you have to have them order it.

Nope, don't think so. The SP is syn. or semi-syn.. The SP is the only oil reccomended for our trannys.

No. However Amsoil makes a fluid that meets both VI and SP, in case you want a premium alternative.

AMSOIL - Synthetic Fuel Efficient Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATL)

No way Jose!!!

If you use th VI then say good-bye to your tranny, warranty and all the green in your bank account. I hear it will wreck it a good one.

The only thing on our trucks that use VI is the power steering and hydro boost from what I recal reading.

I have the Amsoil SP replacment now but I'm up for a change again and noticed how much cheaper the sp is. I was only asking because the like above has both the Vi and Sp listed as teh same and I didnt think that was correct.

From O'Reillys site.

"Motorcraft - QtTransFluid
Part Number: MERCON SP

*MERCON VI QT"

Ah I see. Its just a quirk with their system. When you phone to order it tell them to look up part number MERCON SP. It will bring up the right stuff. It may take them a while to figure it out though as I don't think they have sold much of it.
