On edit, I could be wrong maybe AFE puts media in there that the stockers dont have, I know the stocker is hollow with the exception of the screen.
Well thats the only filter I have for my trans so thats what got changed.

Anyone know anything about the new Mercon LV? A buddy of mine bought an 09 this past summer and his tranny dipstick said Mercon LV.

#3 Then finally, Ford got their act together and put filters on the later trucks like 07's had (the "toilet paper" one).

Ford figured that the internal filter is good enough, and they dropped it for some later 2008's (#2 from earlier in my post). Then they realized they were replacing a lot of transmissions due to clutch dust contamination. So decided to start using the "toilet paper" filters again. Any truck that had no external filter that got tranny work done got an external "toilet paper" filter installed with the service.

I have option number 1, with the external filter/4 lines. My truck has a build date of 3/07. Which filter setup is the best out of the three? I have 15.5k miles currently, bone stock. If power is added at a later date, should I be worried about Transmission life?

i was wondering about this too. i have also heard that past a certain mileage, you shouldnt change your tranny fluid. if you keep to a schedule then good, if you never have, then dont. any truth to this? at which mileage should we change the fluid and filter for our trans on the 6.0?

This might add a little something to this discussion -- hopefully.

I have an 06, which obviously came with the screen in the pan and the external filter near the front bumper. I just changed the screen to the newer style "filter" and the pan to match. I didn't change anything else. I have added 9 quarts of Mercon SP and I am just into the H mark when checking my fluid after driving and in park. I could probably add another half quart and might. I had heard before that if I kept everything the same it would be 8 quarts to refill.

I think this means the newer pan (and filter) added capacity to my system.

True, and if you removed the external from the system, you'd lose a quart and end up back at your original 8 to refill. Externals seem to be worth a quart, and just hold it outside of the pan.

Unrealted, but related. I am getting ready to change the ATF and filter soon on my 08 and have been reading up on it. On another forum that I am not a member of I was reading where someone was saying that the trans temp needed to stay at 170* or the theromstat might shut off the cooler flow and you will just end up mixing the fluid?
