My problem is water in fuel. Thought maybe I could just replace the hpfp myself but the whole fuel system needs to be redone. supposedly my Insurance company might pay for the repair. Why should I pay 8900 to repair a fuel system on a motor with 200,000 miles? If I get a check from the ins company I'll buy another motor or sell the truck as is and go from there. Can I get a complete motor installed for 15,000? Thats about 6,000 out of pocket with the ins proceeds! I've been pricing out long blocks and parts and who does the forum recommend for a long block? Is Jasper any good?
no personal experience, but I have seen some people running their transmissions with no issues. one of them was a coworker with a programmed 06 cummins and he towed a lot with the jasper transmission with no issues.
I wouldn't imagine their engines being any less quality?
Ive been on your website, you have good pricing. I'll be making a purchase from you. I was in a local shop last month and a tech was doing a motor exchange on a 6.4 and told me it was a 12,000 job, when I went back and seen him the price went up. First of all this wasn't with new injectors and pump and some other items. Of course the turbos were gonna be reused too. I don't think anything less than 18,000 will cover a complete motor and that's not using new electrical harnesses. I would have everything new under the valve covers, maybe reuse injector cups only. Are the fuel rails replaced also when reworking the fuel system? I'll never own another 6.4
FWIW, any diesel with a common rail HP fuel system is very sensitive to water in fuel. That's why they have a drain on the primary filter. The 6.4 needs regular maintenance and you can't skimp on it.
Is to pull yours and rebuild it. WHY?? Because with a Ford reman you still get the crappy Ford pistons and the EGR profile cam!!! Mine all said an done parts and machine costs was right at 6k. I did of course do all the work myself which saves a ton, but it is built to last also. You can fix all the bottom end issues this way. Or order a short or long block from Dynamic Diesel Inc. They are who my pistons and lifters came from. If your going to spend the money, at least spend it right.
Also saying "I will never own another 6.4" because you let water go through the fuel system is like wiping before you poop.
Perhaps so. It better be water in the fuel is all I can say. I bought the truck new in sept 07 and Ive only done general maintenance and at 197,000 I wouldn't be complaining but 9,000 for the fuel system alone is a joke. I don't necessary think I need a new motor as of now but I'm trying to figure out the best way to proceed. I do have some blow by and was told by some local clown the motor was shot. Maybe when the valve covers are removed and if the top end looks good it might show me something as to the bottom end? Can the cab be lifted with jacks, with out a proper lift?
6.4's and 6.0's have a pretty good blow by from the factory. If your worried about it pull the oil fill cap off and filp it upside down and place it over the hole. Use a finger to not let it walk down the slope. While running does the cap blow off, or just sit there? If it just sit there its normal blow by. If it trys to hop and blow up into the air then its excessive. What is the reasoning behind needing a full fuel system? Is there metal in the system? That's usually the only reason a full fuel system is recommended.
I have one customer that uses Intl Maxforce pistons to lower the compression ratio? I know the valve train on these trucks were not a strong point. You'll definitely want to know if there is metal in the fuel lines.
I came here here over a month ago with I thought was needing only the hpfp but later found a single piece of metal in the fuel bowl top filter housing. There wasn't any metal found in there when I first removed the filter. Once I attempted to remove the turbos cab on, a month later I unscrewed the fuel cap and whamo, a single pc of steel. So I want an all new fuel system, maybe the injectors can be bench tested IDK but like I say, metal. I haven't been the best maintenance guy in the world is why this happened. BTW I can't remove those turbo bolts, can't get any leverage cab on. Its good to know about the blow by, seen Bill Hewlett mention all of these having this and just confirming. I've actually become a student of these diesels and have researched every source of info I find for several months now.
So your basing a 9k repair bill on one piece of metal found?? I mean it COULD point to a HPFP failure, or be just a random piece from somewhere including the LPFP...Usually we see these trucks needing fuel systems when they are chock full of glitter and shavings.
The Maxxforce pistons are stronger and heavier. They don't decrease compression unless you de-lip them, and even then only a little. The Ford version of these pistons were lightened up as much as possible and have a tendency to crack under loads of daily driving and emissions. The MaxxForce ones handle the stress better, and when de-lipped and ceramic coated and an awesome platform to build off of. The new updated ford rocker arms seem to be doing awesome as wear goes, but that will still need to be tested long term. The hardened tips are way better then the OE stuff from 08. Add to the geometry the way the cam is cut to permute EGR flow and wear on the lifters and a cam becomes a very important upgrade, hence why I recommended to build one yourself, or buy a built short or long block with the parts to fix the bottom end issues.

I should look into those Maxforce pistons...sometimes we can get a deal on IH parts.
Are the cams all custom grind, or does someone offer these out of the box?
I cant help you with any of your problems. But i can save you future ones. DONT BUY A JASPER MOTOR.
I bought a jasper 7.3 complete(turbo to oil pan) 18 months ago. Nothing but problems. 2 turbos. cracked head. bad injector. Thermostat housing cracked. stuck thermostat. Every day is a gamble now....
Only pic I have left, but the top one is my melted slug, the second is a stock 6.4, and bottom is a stock 6.4 that's delipped and ceramic coated. Notice how big the bowl is. That the lip that's taken out. It's usually where the cracks start.
The insurance company was on my *** to get an estimate for the fuel system repairs, nobody would actually give me one based on what I say. I broke down and towed it in to Ford, what a mistake that was. While they had the cab up and are replacing the fuel system, I asked them for some pricing on replacing the oil cooler, the rockers, glow plugs, they would furnish those parts, I asked them to install new rad hoses and cac boots, I have bought mishimoto and have them along with new non-egr upipes, they want close to 4,000 for this, 650 to piece motor back together because I removed the rad hoses and cac boots already. They tell me they didnt have to remove the turbos for the hpfp but have to for the oil cooler and the intake. I wish I could post this email they sent me. So far They have only dropped the tank, cleaned it and replaced the broken screen and I have to pay 265 just for the screen on the pickup tube, I priced them at $30. I stopped all the work a month ago to negotiate and there sticking to there guns. They haven't been paid and I'll be picking up the truck and will owe 765 for what they've done.
