Transmission oil

I'm fixing to change my trans oil what is the best kind to use and also what filter?

Since you posted in a 6.4l section, I'm assuming you have a 6.4l. The oil that Ford specifies is Mercon SP. No other Mercon (not Mercon V or Mercon III)oil should touch that thing. It is a full synthetic, and it is pretty good from what I understand.

There is potentially some other Mercon SP compatible fluids, but for the cost of a transmission, I don't think that I will take a chance on them not being exactly right. Amsoil makes one, and I think that there maybe one other.

If the $5 a quart at the dealership is too much, go to your local Orielly Auto Parts (if you have one) and special order it. It costs about $2.xx there. Totally worth a day or two waiting. The filter cost at the dealership is pretty much the same as the parts store. Carquest is where I ended up getting mine. I bought another one for my other truck at the dealer, and it might have been a buck more.
