I recently bought a 2008 f350 with a manual transmission. I am starting hear a rattling sound coming from the base of the stick shift. The truck drives and shifts great . Anybody out there have any ideas what the noise could be? Sounds like a loose screw or bolt of some kind.
Well, the shifter is bolted onto the truck, so I guess it could be one of the bolts used on that? If you take the boot off you will see the bolts. But that would be weird for one of them to rattle loose. I'd pull the boot off and inspect.
I already took the boot off and checked all the bolts and screws that were visible. I read on one of these forums that there are some plates around the tranny that vibrate sometimes. Guess it's time to crawl under there and get dirty! Lol.
Its a cheap part that fits on the output shaft. The tranny has to be pulled away to fit the new one though. Couple hours labor in the tranny shop. Part is probably $40ish.
What kind of damage would a worn out bearing cause? I trust the mechanic that will be doing the work but just want to be prepared for the worst. The truck hasn't had any problems shifting or staying in gear.
