You need a 36mm socket, 18"-24" extension, a large drain pan and the soap of your choice to wash the diesel off of you. You will take a diesel bath. Drain the lower filter, remove the cap, change the filter then do the top filter. Make sure you turn the key to the on position, leave it on for thirty seconds. Then turn it off. Do this six times to get the air out of the system. I buy my filters from Ford 6.4 Liter Turbo Diesel Motorcraft FD-4609 Fuel/Water Seperator Filters(FD4609): Pick Up & Excursion Good luck Shinny |

I just buy them at the parts store (Orielly Auto Parts). If you have a 4x4, you may need up to 3-4' of extensions to get the bottom one out. And you must enjoy taking a bath in diesel. Once you get the filter out, it will drain out continuously till you get a new one in there. Some people say that if you have less than 1/4 of a tank of diesel when you start, it won't continue siphoning out on your face. I haven't gotten around to trying that yet. I will definitely give it at try, it can't hurt any more than diesel in the eyes.

I just bought mine from an auto parts store. They had one set in stock. I am lucky it happens to be a distribution warehouse also for parts stores. I changed mine and hardly got any diesel on me this time. I opened the stop **** with a large juice bottle under it. I then started to back out the cap to release the filter. I left it drain and only got a quarter of bottle out of it. I had three quarters of a tank. When you back it out I think it closes the filter housing off a stop **** of some sort in side. I did have my son help and hold it up to the drian ****. I will probably get a tube to put it on for next time so there are not two people under truck and same area. |

fr the record, I've changed my filters twice..... I don't recall exactly how much fuel was in the tank at the time, but I've not experienced a continuous drain from the tank while the lower filter was removed. The filter does drain though, which does create a mess. a use a dish pan to catch the fuel as it comes out of the filter and filter housing. It is sort of a PITA to get the lower fuel filter off, but it's definitely doable for anyone with some hand tools. Good luck. |

The 6.0s, apparently, would drain the tank if you let them. The setup has been redesigned on the '08s, and will eventually stop. I've personally found that if I replace the underhood filter first, and give the water seperator ample time to drain, I get a lot less fuel coming out when I pull the frame rail filter. Granted I've only done it 3 times so far so its not a science. |
