First oil change coming up on the recently purchased 6.4. I have always used Rotella T 15w40 in my 6.0 and was curious as to what seems to be working out the best in the 6.4. I will stick with the Motorcraft filters, but I want to lean another direction on the engine oil. I have been reading alot about the Mobil 1 Delvac 1300 15w40 and it does specify on a few places that i have seen, that it meets all International/Navistar requirements. It does not say Ford though. It is also endorsed by Cummins. I am aware the oil has to meet API CJ-4 requirements for emissions but I would like to hear from everyone about what oil they have heard being used the most? Appreciate it.....

How many miles does the break in period cover? Appreciate everyone's input with this. Does it matter that I live in south Mississippi where we never see freezing temperatures. Mostly warm temperature's. I know the SYN 5W40 performs well in cold weather, but how will it do in seasonably warm weather compared to the CONV 15w40?

Hard to put a number on how long it takes to break-in. Really depends on your driving style. From what I've been told by somebody who really knows his stuff is no less then 10K miles if you tow now and then. If you baby the engine could take as long as 20K miles or more. On average, after 10K miles it should be fine to use SYN oil in a diesel engine. Thats what I did and my truck runs great! 16K total miles, City MPG 14, HWY doing 69 MPH light head wind 19.5 MPG (hand calculated) tail wind 21 MPG. Before SYN oil MPG was 10% less. My truck regens on average between 400 to 500 Miles, no ticking noise hehe. |

I use the Rotella 5w-40 synthetic CJ-4. However, I may change to Redline as I've always had very good luck with it in my race cars, etc. Redline recommends using their 15w-40 in the 6.4L motor which is good to well below freezing. They tell me that I can really go 10k miles instead of 5k with my oil changes.

if you live in cold regions you should use syn if not you do not need it.I have ran regular rotella in diesels for many many years with great results.
