Friend of mine went to get his 6.0 smogged today....passed the visual but failed because they plugged it in and could see egr isnt working. Smog guy said as of may 1st the state made them get new equipment to test the ecm too. Anyone else heard of this????? His truck does have egr cooler welded shut and is flashed with stock tune minus egr.
not to unbelievable I almost wish we would get that in AZ an maybe do away with the wide open throttle test 4200 rpme 3x's sucks one year I had to do it 9x
Zmann you must be up in east la, in tucson they just put a sniffer in the tailpipe and ya run around 50 mph on the rollers. mine showed 0% particulates this year, was 9-11% I think last year! rally surprising since baja az is such a lib bastion of stupidity.
Most likely they saw a soft code. Depending on year the P0401 Insufficient EGR flow code will NOT throw a CEL but will store as a memory code. They WILL fail on that code. If a tuner that shuts the EGR off is used then there will be no codes for the EGR system and the truck will pass. As far as I know they will not and cant actuate tests. This can cause engine damage if they don't know what they are doing. Soft codes will always tip them off tho.
They have plugged mine in as well and i think they check vin and codes only. I dont think his throws a code because the ecm was rolled back and egr turned off quite a while ago, it has passed smog previously. But i agree with warchild......
I had my truck smogged a few weeks ago. It "failed" because not all the sensors were reading. So I had to go drive it for about 15 minutes and come back. Once all of the sensors were up and being read, it was good to go.
The best part, my truck wasn't even supposed to be smogged this year. My renewal paper even said that I could renew online. Then about a month ago I got a letter saying that it needed a smog.
For anyone wondering, this state sucks. Can't tune your truck, can't change anything on your truck. Hell, due to the drought, you can't even WASH YOUR TRUCK!
We have been getting consistent phone calls from our customers in CA asking about this very subject. It sounds like the inspection stations and procedures have changed this year. The ECM monitors items like egr on the 6.0L and if it does not complete the self test, it will have a "Readiness Monitor Not Complete" warning which NOW will fail in CA.
Here we have the opacity test, plus a visual inspection. Basically you slam the engine up against the rev limit and hold it for a few seconds. You repeat this procedure 3-4 times, if the smoke out of the exhaust is below their given threshold, then you pass. We have yet to see them hook any type of scan tool, or diagnostic equipment to the truck, although that day is probably coming.
haha f this state, only here for mil reasons but man do they know how to give it to ya. registration 400+ this year......roads suck, diesel prices suck (better than gas tho) people mostly suck. weather is nice here i can give it that. I might be headed back to GA to register my truck now after this. God forbid i put a little puff of coal on the road and and every hippie with a medical mask retaliates.
Diesel Smog Check - All 1998 & newer diesel powered vehicles weighing under 14,500 GVW will need a diesel smog check. The diesel smog test will not include the emissions test portion of the regular inspection. There will be no tailpipe emissions test. Dynamometer testing will not be part of the diesel smog check inspection. Your vehicle will not be driven on the dynamometer during the diesel smog check. Instead the Diesel smog check will focus on a visual inspection of your vehicle's emissions/smog components, a system check of the On Board Diagnostics (OBD II) system, a visual smoke check for excessive black smoke, and an EVAP functional test. Diesel cars and trucks which fail the diesel smog test will have their vehicles repaired at a diesel repair shop.
this is from the CA DMV , dont know if this is updated or not but its off the site.
We ,up here in Ontario Canada have the same " E TEST " procedure (s) depending on the
registered weight of the truck . Our 2 door reg box 6.0 has the snap test and they check
for CEL operation and codes . Our CCSB is registered over 8000 lbs and requires a commercial test which is opacity plus ecm monitoring while being watched live by the
government via camera . They check the CEL operation and scan for codes . Then the
tester pins the motor to the rev limit 8 times . THIS IS JUST THE PRE TEST ! After which
they do it all again for the actual test .
So for a total of 16 complete reamings your motor had better be in good shape .
That's not all . We also have many provincial "cars" driving around with enviromental cops that can pull you over and perform a roadside test . They do a visual for components and an OBD2 connection and check
for system functions like EGR .
As for the actual test were they beat the crap out of your motor , if it pitched a rod etc. , I'm sure they would say
" too bad , so sad and have a nice day "
did we ever get an answer for the egr not being ready for smog? as in can you boot the old or stock protocols and that intern fix the issue? (I'm believing the egr is turned off by a tune and not permanently deleted by a weld or re route kit) might just install the factory back on when the time comes.
I was told by a tech at the Beck rd station after I told him this tes was Bull**** and I didn't feel comfortable doing the WOT specially 9 friggin times cause their machine was screwed up
He stated they would pay for any damage the WOT test caused
thats probably why He works n 120 * sniffing exhaust fumes He can't answer questions factually LOL I knew that was never going to happen .
so you guys can't pass a Cali test with a P1000 until the drive cycles and parameters are met ?
I am pretty sure my CTS will clear a P1000
I may have to reset my FICM to under 58 volts since that throws a soft code
I wondered why AZ doesn't put you on the rollers ? maybe they can't deal with the varied exhaust sizes /locations so they keep the exhaust outside of the bay when we test as of now
funny LD diesels used to be exempt and motorcycle weren't
that flip flopped
I will say waiting in line on a bike sucked and was probably a liability to them if someone passed out ?
I'm pretty sure if the tester sees any code, they can fail it. I run a Hypertech programmer. I took the truck back to stock a couple of days ahead of time so the P1000 would have time to clear.
if i ever have to pass another smog nazi deal i will have to get a new turbo which will make my truck expell MORE smog when i drive it...putting the mental in governMENTAL
So can anyone confirm that all deleted trucks will cause the reediness failure in Cali? I know that depending on my 6.0 tune that I had loaded it would pass the monitors and have 0 codes. If I used Chris's SPD for example the P1000 would set and stay constantly. With Matt or Vivian's tunes it wasn't there. BTW a P1000 is a soft code. I am curious how they know that specifically the EGR hasn't completed reediness, or are they assuming that when they see the P1000 in a diesel? As that's about the only reediness monitor that needs full drive cycles to reset and be good.
Soooooo... If they run a 6.4 at wot and throw a rod through the block they are going to pay the 12 grand to replace it? Sounds like a good way of "fixing" a 6.4 to me...
I don't know what the "Snap parameters are
but Arizona flat out call our Diesel opacity test a snap test and you hit WOT for 2-3 seconds 2-3 times
I have been forced to do 9 "snap" "wot" test before they had me change lanes and try again and pass or maybe they passed me regardless cause I was beyond pissed and all our trucks seem to pass opacity with a tiny percent of the actual allowable limit so it seems ridiculous IMO
