'03 6.0 vs 02 Duramax Comparison

Just wondering about the difference in the "Shadetree mechanic friendliness" of the stroker vs the duramax. Seemed like when I looked at buying an 02 duramax a couple weeks ago that an average joe could not work on these things and everything that went out costed 3 grand at the dealership to fix. The 6.0 seems a lot easier to maintain and repair (injectors, glowplugs, etc) Is that really so...BTW i could never get anyone to respond to any of my questions on the duramax forum like I can here...Thanks guys. I am prolly going to buy the truck today

Chevy had a lot of issues with the allison trannys the first few years. The lb7 I think is what is in the 02 and it is a strong engine. The carring case is a different issue all together. I looked at dmaxes when I bought my truck and read up on the issues. Most will say the 03 6.0 is junk and avoid them untill 06-07.... That being said mine is a early 04 built 11/03 and I have only had a oil cooler go on mine and I'm completely satisfied with the fit and finish and performance of the truck. Before you consider buying either get a oasis on the ford to find out what has been done warranty wise. This will help you buying by eliminating problem trucks. I believe the dmax has a similar warranty record. As far as turning wrenches, with a auto engunuity software and a tech manual you can do just about anything a dealer can. Like anything mechanical working with proper and good tools makes everything a lot easier.

I had the oasis done before I bought it today and the truck has had no problems other than recalls. The 02 Dmax I looked at had problems galore when I had the records pulled...My car dealer buddy said he sold the dmax to a guy after I didn't buy it and 3 days later the injector pump went out (3 Grand). he said he tried to talk the guy out of buying it so they could just auction it and get rid of it, but the guy insisted. I'm glad my instinct was right!
