I have 2. I have an 02 tdi 5spd Beetle and an 06 tdi(pd) DSG Jetta. 180k on the beetle and 85k on the jetta. Great cars, just have to maintain them to make em last.

I have always liked the little TDI Jetta's, just havent found one close enough and for the right price. You wouldnt happen to know how they start in the cold possibly? I'll be in Big Rapids next year and from what I hear it likes to hit 10 and 20 below.

I had an 01 Jetta TDi for 2 years and the fuel mileage was incredible! I drove 65k miles in those two years and averaged 43 city and 47 highway. I won't lie, it did leave me stranded in SoCal twice due to what the German mechanic called "cheap Mexican plastic parts". After that, I felt like I couldn't trust it anymore and sold it. There are many days when I would love to have that car back as it had plenty of torque for any hill.
Now if the 2L motor is the same one that was in the 04-05 Passat, then I would be all over it since that was a very powerful little motor. I never had any problems starting the car in sub-freezing temperatures when I lived in Utah. |

Uncle has an 08, seems okay. Cousin has like an 02, kinda crappy. bull**** problems. Engine and tranny good, but the early 00's had automatic tranny problems apparently. Cousin regrets it over a small truck, but whatever.

I had a 96 passat TDI. Great engine(380K when I sold it and never missed a beat) crappy car (it was always having little problems with door handles, trunk latches and everything rattled. It's kind of like a Dodge truck.

The wife has an '05 TDI Jetta. Has 115,000 mi. and runs like it just came out of the showroom. Pricey to fix though.

I had three but they were the original 1.9, 90 hp, as far as cars go they were the best I ever owned-the first, 99.5 Jetta sedan provided about 97,000 flawless miles in LESS than one year with only scheduled maint.
I understand the new ones are as reliable as the old but the mileage is a bit off, in all three of the ones we had, manual transmissions, I never got less than 57 mpg-the best was 60 going to SC one year. Cold starting was not a problem though I never experienced the temps you mentioned and I did have an EZHeat pad pan heater. I will say that in the bitter cold if you were stopped at a light with the heater going you could watch the temp fall like a rock, amazing really. Take it, you will love the car. My biggest gripe is the lack of awd and ground clearance, these cars are LOW... Now if only Subaru will come out with their diesel... |
