For anyone doing the MBRP Turbo Back on an ‘05 PSD

Ok well it’s a new forum so let’s get the ball rolling. Installed my MBRP turbo back exhaust the other day on my ’05 PSD and figured I’d post how things went. The install was pretty easy and straight forward. My band at the turbo/down pipe needed some persuasion to come off but other than that it went fine. One person can do the install but two would be ideal to help hold things, get beer etc. The frame of the truck is VERY sharp in places so be careful – I found out the hard way by laying the back of my thumb wide open.
After it was all said and done, the truck sounds nearly exactly like it did stock unfortunately. I did notice an EGT drop and the turbo response is still the same. I do run the Predator in the 65hp mode, so the truck is already quick but the slight turbo lag I have stayed the same. That being said, I’m going to take my snazzy new cam corder out today and get an .mpg of how it sounds now. Then I’m going to pull the muffler and get another .mpg so people looking at installing the MBRP can get an idea of the difference.

Its too bad that it wasnt more of a night and day difference. Feel free to send me those movies, and I'll post them on this site, as well as Truck Improvement.com. Is that exhaust 4" all the way from the turbo, or do they put a 3.5" on the downpipe?

From my experience it does seem like you get more power as well as sound(from the turbo) from a new intake install. Although, I hear Ford's stock intake on the 6.0L isnt too bad to start out with.

As far as I know its 4” all the way back. Yeah I was really hoping for a bit more out of it but it’s pretty easy to change configurations – loose the muffler, cat or a variation. I’ll probably try all the variations and although I anticipate without the cat being the best performance and sounding configuration, I’d prefer to not deal with the “legality” issues of having it off……plus I live in a nice neighborhood and firing that bad girl up at 0500 would probably PO some people. That would be great if you host the clips. I’ll shoot you those .mgp’s as I take them, or you can just pull ‘em off my FTP server. I searched and searched for clips when I was shopping for exhaust and all I could find was the clip from the MBRP site. It would have been nice to have a bit more, so I figured it would be helpful AND give me a chance to show off my truck and play with my camera.
Not too sure about the intake yet. Working on vehicles is a huge hobby of mine but I’m completely new to the diesel. It’s SO much fun learning and playing with it…..even though my wife about falls over every time I start cutting or drilling on it! :p

I agree it is an easy install, took me a couple hours to do. But later had to do a little re-adjusting. I installed MBRP's "Cool Duals" turbo back on my '04 and with the cat installed it sounds nearly stock. Since they don't check for cats on diesels where I live I later installed the cat delete pipe and I definitely like the way it sounds now. Sounds much better under exceleration, and more turbo whistle, too. I like the fact that while cruising along it sounds stock, but downshift and get on it and it sounds sweet. Haven't tried without the muffler, tho. I noticed a quicker spool up on the turbo but it still has some lag. My system is 3.5" from the turbo back to just behind the cat, the delete pipe is 3.5" also. From there back it is 4". Later plan to install a Banks Techno-cooler. We'll see how that helps the turbo lag.

Sounds good! I would love to see those cool duals. You should put some pics of your truck in our Garage(photo gallery).

Was there any reason why you didnt go 4" all the way from the turbo? Just curious.

Yeah duals look sweet on a rig! I WISH I could loose the cat but here in Houston they check EVERYTHING, so I'd be constantly putting it back on. Now I HAVE been thinking about fabbing up a way I can splice in a "bypass pipe" that I can toggle to and from by sliding something in place........clear as mud right? Kind of like those exhaust that allow you to go from full exhaust to straight headers by sliding a block off plate.

Welcome on board Ice!

Thanks, it's good to see a site just for the Powerstroke! I didn't go 4" all the way as that was how MBRP offered it, and I believe Banks is the same way. Not sure about any others. Silverline was the only other one I saw offering duals, but couldn't find too much info on them at the time so went with MBRP. After installing it I don't think there would be much room left to squeeze a 4" downpipe between the firewall and block. I had to play around with this one to get it in and have it not contact the firewall, causing an irritating rattle, once it warmed up. Thus the re-adjusting. But she's been good ever since.

I can relate to the rattle. I had to cut and re-weld one of the rods that goes through an exhaust hanger, because it was against the frame. My neighbor thought I was nuts under my new PSD welding on it.

any lag that has developed is most likely tied to reduced heat in the turbine. which is happening because you opened up the air flow, making the engine run leaner and cooler.

Have you actually noticed a decrease in performance? you may have lag or even lower boost but there mey not have been an actual change to performance since you are flowing more air through the engine.

Since I have stick, I can't get it up in the RPM band as easily just cruising along, as an auto can, thus as it does accelerate you feel the turbo spool up at around 1000-1200 RPM. It's no worse then when it was stock, just it spools up faster now, like you said because of the increase in airflow. No decrease in performance what so ever. In fact, it's like a new truck with the exhaust. Banks claims that since their techno-cooler flows better then stock, it keeps boost pressure up at the manifold, decreases boost temps, and increases air density, thus overall increasing performance. I plan to pair it up with the aFe Stage 2 intake and Pro-Guard 7 filter. I figure it will help with the lag I feel, but overall finish up the breathing easy mods I've already done. We'll see. Ice
