Question 06 6.0

Will be taking delivery of a new F-250 PSD and am wondering on how it should be broker in. I'm a big truck owner in MI hauling 50T loads and was in the shop today for standard pm work, I asked my mechanic what he thought and he said don't baby it, run the crap out of it for the first few hundred miles. Any coments?

Thanks
Dan H

run the crap out of a 6.0 all the time. we see the most problems with the "babied" trucks. dont over work it, but drive it like they are meant to be driven. hit high rpm's on take offs some times, etc. they dont need to be "broken in" per se...no motor does any more. the moly based rings in the newer motors are basically broken in 10 seconds after initaial start up off the assembly line. hope this helps........marc

Welcome to Powerstroke.org Dan!
I broke mine in with the "drive it like you stole it" mentality. I installed my Predator tune at about 500 miles and now over 20K miles later I just cruise her like normal people drive - she just purrs like a kitten.......ok a kitten out of some freaky sci-fi movie that growls real loud, likes to whistle, eats rice burners and belches black smoke.

One more thing though and I know Marc warns people about this frequently - be careful if you tune her. I've had great luck with mine but again like I mentioned I drive what I consider "normal" now - for fuel economy and to put a few hundred thousand on my rig.....ok I occasionally smoke a gasser to prove a point but not very often anymore.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the replies guy's, just as I thought, my guy is top notch on big engines but figured I'd check. It should be in nest week, crew cab, 4x4, Lariat, leather, short box, tow command, 3.73 limited slip, just about all the goodies. This will be my retirement truck.

Sounds like a VERY NICE rig Dan! Be sure and post some pictures in your Powerstroke.org garage when you get it, we'd all love to see it.

Got my new truck last week and love it, any advise on the mileage or how many miles before it starts to improve? As of now i'm getting about 13.5 highway and city. 3.73 gear with 5 speed auto, not heavy footed. Will post some pics soon.

Thanks,
DanH

Well from what I understand a lot of guys tend to see increases in mileage the more miles they put on them. You can see increases with the right chip, and keeping yourself light footed as you said. However oftentimes once people put chips on their trucks they can't resist using all the newfound power, and mileage increases that are there get lost in the right foot and adrenalin rush!! Get a good filtering intake, and free flowing exhaust kit and you'll see great improvements in mileage and efficiency without chipping it. Enjoy your truck Dan!

HEY! That's MY retirement truck! Yes, your mileage will improve around the 15 K mark. For some reason it takes that long for everything to start working together nicely.
