Has anyone put one on a 6.0? They turn over so much better.
Only info I can find is a guy put a 6.0 starter on his 6.4 and everything worked fine so I would assume vice versa would also work.

I really have no idea whats different, but every 6.4 ive been in spins over way better than a 6.0.
And yea, cheapest 6.4 starter I found was $300, and cheapest 6.0 is $85, I dont plan on buying a new one, I was gunna hit the wrecking yard.

More than likely it the motor not the starter that is making the difference.

Yea thats the same thing I saw.

If I remember correctly a 6.4 starter is tighter to get out meaning there is less room to remove it. Other than that I haven't paid attention to the physical differences.

I've seen some 6.0s crank in the 180-190 RPM range, that's really singing for a 6.0

It's possible because of the different engines the starters are made different to handle the longer crank times a 6.0 might experience compared to a 6.4.

I just checked mine, its turning about 150 (top right), it just seems slow to me.

I might try to get one next week and give it a try if I have time, I have to go to school on the new aluminum f150's.
I know the 6.0 sounds kinda normal, but the 6.4's sound more like the gear reduction starters ive had on race cars.

Just to add to it......looks like a 6.7 starter will bolt up too lol.

Ive thought about that.....the 6.4 is 17.5:1cr and the 6.0 is 18.0:1 that shouldnt make too much difference. Maybe the flex plate is a different size. Idk ill probably try the starter if they dont want too much for it.

why not rebuild your starter? if its not toast, Bushings, brushes and some grease. Not sure what else is in the diesel starters, but I have never bought a new or used starter, I always rebuild.

My dad's Dodge turns over like the hulk is spinning a Honda 1.8 liter motor.

He had a 05.5. I'd match starting my truck to our 90s Ford tractor and like 02 dozer. His is also common rail to I think

Hhhm, I didnt think about the hpop slowing down the starter on the 6.0, could possibly have something to do with it.

I always thought it was because the 6.4 is a common rail and fuel is hitting the injectors quicker, on the hpop engines oil pressure has to build in order to get the injectors going, hence the longer start time. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but that has been my understanding.

Yea but im not experimenting with crank time as much as crank speed.

6.4 starter is in hand.

Its still in the back of the truck lol. Ill put it on the lift tomorrow or friday to swap it out. I gotta make sure it works and clean it first too.

Yeah 150-160 is in the normal range for a 6.0. I put a new starter in a 6.7 last week and it was hitting 195 right before it fired.

I know mine cranks a little slow but the batteries are strong and the cables are good. It's the starter for sure but I don't have the heart to just toss out a starter that's still actually working. I think all it would take is about 10-15 seconds of cranking to kill it though.

The 6.0 I put heads on last week was doing a steady 180 while I was trying to build oil pressure, oddly enough it was a NAPA starter too. You work on enough you start noticing how some of these things crank different than others

What a great idea you had. That motor really cranks fast now. It starts like instantly, spinning that fast.

Are the starter dimensions any different other than what is in the housing?

I always put the top bolt in the starter before I put it in place for an easy bolt up, so if the dimensions are the same a person could do the same with this starter.

Thanks for the idea.
