Cold Weather Oil Change Question

I had originally posted about changing oil for a trip. Well, that is a moot point because I need to change it now due to making an extra unplanned trip. This is the question. I currently use conventional Rotella 15W40 in my truck. Will it hurt to switch to synthetic 5W40, given I am going to Liberty, MO where the average temperature while I am there 20-27 DEC will be a high of 30 and low of 17? One night it will get down to 3. I do not spending the extra money on oil if this will keep me freezing up?

Help?

G

I run Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme 5W-40 synthetic.
I think the high was 12* today, no issues. Performs great, very smooth starting.

Starts and idles much smoother than Rotella 15w-40. My trucks have always been loud and really loud when starting in the cold.
