2003 6.0 but not much whistle...
I recently bought an all-stock 2003 Excursion 6.0 built 11/02. From descriptions I've read it should be whistling like a jet even at idle but I just don't hear much. A little wind-up sound but not much else.
I got the Oasis report and nothing unusual there, no turbo replacement or really anything significant despite being an "early build" so maybe it was one of the good ones. All the latest software updates are present. It runs as strong as expected, boost reaches up to 24 psi according to OBD II data and thankfully no error codes so I'm wondering if maybe my catalytic converter is soaking up all that great turbo noise? It has 110K miles. Cat and muffler are original. Also, the insulation on the hot-side intercooler hose... is that there to reduce turbo noise? |

Even with the cat/muffler, they whistle. You may be correct that the cat is clogged. Make that thing fall off along with the muffler (shouldn't cost more than $50-$100 total) and you'll be privy to a whole new world of sound.

I don't really hear mine at idle, only when I get on it.

straight pipe the factory exhaust. It should whistle.
Replaced turbo may not show up on oasis if it was out of warranty. |

On my 03 once I removed the factory exhaust and the cat was gone you could hear it whistling for along ways away. I know when I had it down to the dunes I couldn't drive thru the campground without people stopping and wanting to know what I had done to the truck. My 03 had a I believe it was called resignator in the down pipe and was told that helped get rid of the whistle. I know the day I picked it up after the factory exhaust was removed my wife was following me home and she said she couldn't believe how loud the whistle was. She was several cars back at the stoplight I covered in smoke.

Mine whistles pretty good with a 4" turbo back with the Magnaflow muffler still in. I am considering taking it out though.

Thanks for great info everybody. I'll have to check out the condition of my cat next.
The turbo in the video sounds awesome, maybe a little too awesome for everyday use! |
