Anyone know if there is a write-up floating around for installing manifold gaskets? I'm at a total loss for my low boost issue but I can hear some kind of exhaust leak so I have to assume that's at least part of the problem. Haven't been able to track it down, but I bought some gaskets and thought I'd throw those in as a next step.
I'm really wondering how to get in there. Is there some way to get in through the wheel well? It seems like it would be pretty straight forward except for access. Assuming I don't break any bolts. Although, I have found that the ones I can access were loose, so that may be part of the problem right there...
I've looked as best I can at the flex parts of the pipes and haven't found anything. I haven't pulled them out, but I've checked with a mirror and even pulled the turbo to get a better look at them. I even ran my hands over those areas and didn't feel anything or find any soot. At this point, I wouldn't be against just replacing them...This has been driving me crazy for almost a year. This last weekend I had someone stuff a bunched up rug against the end of the tail pipe while I was underneath hoping I would see something or hear a change in the sound, but no luck.
I wish I could hit 20psi! I even bought the metal CAC pipe and installed it the other day with no change...
I'm assuming it has to be an exhaust leak but can not for the life of me find it. I think I can hear it and it is making me completely crazy. Plus my Looney Tune smokes like crazy when I get on it because I'm lacking boost...
Subscribed, I also have a potential exhaust leak, on idle, I turn up the a/c or even heat and you can smell diesel, but fades away once you roll 10mph or higher, I am hower getting 23 psi boost when WOT. Interested to find out your outcome, I'm also doing a egr delete soon and may dig into it further and replace the gaskets, or even get sinister diesels exhaust manifolds.
yup. I cleaned it and double/tripple checked the exhaust connection to the turbo. It actually wasn't even very dirty when I took it apart, but cleaned it anyway with no change. I've also pressure tested the charged air side and didn't find anything. It would hold pressure and very slowly bleed it off but I couldn't find it leaking anywhere.
I've considered taking the truck in somewhere that could do a smoke test or something on the exhaust just to tell me where it's leaking but I have no idea if that's even an option. Anyone tried charging up from the tailpipe with compressed air? not sure if that would work either.
When I first started hearing what I thought was an exhaust leak a year and a half ago or so, it was just annoying. Now it seems louder (I think) and is really affecting my boost. And my sanity!
You said that you checked the charge side but have you checked the hot side--- maybe the boots have a small leak or blowing past the clamps...just a thought.
I should have been more clear. I pressure tested everything from the turbo to the intake manifold with the air compressor and everything checked out alright. I'm not sure how much pressure I was able to build that way because eventually the pipe cap would blow off but it sounds like people have gotten to about 20psi or so that way.
How much boost are you able to push?
I had a similar problem when I had my truck apart last, ended up being some boost line to the manifold?? Granted I was getting little to no boost, No idea what it was for, but we found it when I had a friend sit over the engine bay and do a boost stall and he was able to immediately source the leak.
Maybe try that? just a suggestion. But also be careful! :thumb:
Was it the line for the EBP sensor? I've tried some power braking when I thought it was on the charged air side of the turbo to see if I could hear anything, but I didn't think of trying that. That may be my next step. Lately, I've seen the boost touch 20psi for a split second when I really hammer it but then it bleeds off pretty quickly and never gets above about 15psi.

I do not believe it was for the EBP sensor, this was a while back but I believe it was on the passenger side of the motor. Later today I'll go out to the truck and try and find it and take a picture for you.
Sadly i do not know what this line does... I'm sure someone will chime in and tell us. But that what was leaking in my case, wouldnt hurt to check the whole hose once over.
That's MAP sensor hose. If it's disconnected or broken, you will definitely lose boost.
