funny how with power limitations they do not have the "gas motor" take off of the f series...but have a better feeling pulling power, even in a 12,000 pound rig.....its gotta make ya wonder......

Navistar uses Blue Dimond Logic electronics. Navistar pushed for that in the F's. The early F's (03 and early 04's) had lots of calibration problems due to problems converting Blue Dimond peramiters to Ford. Thus all the reflashes on the early ones for drivability problems. Now Ford is just tweeking smaller issues. I have talked to afew school bus guys. They say the same as mschn99 same leaks, less drivability and way fewer headgaskets.
It is my guess thet the headgaskets are not as big of problem as they think. I think the engine is prone to hot spots, mainly in the egr cooler. Trucks that have lower egt's have fewer problems with blowing chow. The new recall for the degas bottle label is to lower the coolant level in the degas bottle. This gives the coolant room to expand as it get hot. Time will tell.

Hey Burt the Duramax trucks have done a good job prooving themselves. They have had less problems with them than the 6.0. So you might take a second look. Also the Dodge cummins has always been a terrific engine...

Unfortunately they are in an inferior truck. I'm a parts counterman at a GMC dealership and I can tell you that the GM's have problems too. Here's a short list of commonly replaced parts on GM trucks:
Instrument clusters
Radios
Duramax injectors
Seat adjusters
Steering shafts
Tie rods
Fuel pumps
Fuel senders
ECM's
We do at least a couple of each per day. And we aren't that big of a dealership. I've got a buddy, who's a tech, at a larger GMC dealership that just told me today that he literally spends several hours every day just doing Duramax injectors.

They're still good engines, takes time to get them near perfected like the 7.3 was and the cummins. The point of my post was that the duramax was a good engine. However, what in the stinkin world do radios, seat adjusters, steering shafts and just about everything else besides the injectors have to do with the engine alone? I'm talking the engine itself......not the rest of the truck that surrounds it

I was just trying to show that even though the Duramax MAY be less problematic than the 6.0. They are in an inferior truck. I've never had a problem with any of those items in any of my Ford's. Hence the reason I, and many of the techs at my work, drive Ford's. Even my die-hard MOPAR relatives drive Ford trucks because of their superior build quality.

No denying Ford's build quality of their trucks, that's for sure
