There is an external and internal. Internal is just a screen I believe. I'm not sure on the quarts but 17 sounds high since the motor uses 15.

TRANS FLUID

THANX FOR REPLY,READ THAT IT TAKES 17 QTS.BUT THAT MUST BE COMPLETE DRAIN INCL. TORQUE CONV.SUSPECT THAT THE ONLY FILTER THAT GETS REPL. IS THE EXTERNAL MOUNT FILTER.

Asked the same question in a different forum and found out it's 18 qts of mercon SP for a full flush and the external trans filter is motorcraft sku # FT-145. Hope that helps

Yea! What he said....

That long and only 9 posts? And short on patience for an answer? Wow!

Anyway, a straight drain without getting it out of the Torque Converter and Transmission cooler (which takes some extra tooling) and you will only get out about 10-12 quarts. Drop the pan and there is a transmission filter in there that is easy to get to... The little in line can in the front, is a white fuzzy old style element filter... And ONLY use Mercon SP or an equivalent Full Synthetic like Amsoil Universal...

It is a bit tougher to flush out the transmission cooler and Torque Converter, almost easier to change the fluid more often.. I undid a fitting and pumped out the cooler, but the suck out of the Torque Converter is difficult. I just change mine more often.

This Forum is the best thing to happen to Ford owners, be nice, get better results...
