2003 6.0

I have a question and need some input. I was looking to buy a newer truck and ran across a 2003 6.o crew cab lariat at a great price, but have heard a lot of things about the first of these engines. Can someone help in the answer of buy or not to buy because of this engine? the truck has about 80000 miles on it and according to Ford has only been back in the shop a few times for warranty work.

Id check the bell housing to the transmission for any oil residue. Other than that im no expert but if it has 80K on it a defect would have shown its self by now. The good side=The 03 6.0L has a 10 vane turbo rotor and whistles like a champ!!!!!

more than likely any problems the truck has had should have been taken care of, in my opinion and i work on these every day , i would own an early 03 model before an 04 or 05, i do less work on them than 04 mostly , but are not plagued with high pressure oil issues like the 05, ill break it down even more by year and problems

2003 - rear main seal leak , some injector issues,an icp sensor may crack and leak also , the updates from ford have made better

2004 - several different oil leaks , some injectors issues , egr valve problems , a wiring nightmare , turbo sticking , head gaskets, egr cooler

2005 - every problems 6.0 ever had is seen in an 05 model, wiring problems were less than o4 but i do more work on 05 models than any other

06 and 07 , seen some slight problems but not bad at all

The things that Ford did on this truck were replaced intercooler on passenger side, replaced egr and replaced an injector the rest was recall work.I'm was thinking like Scruffy that any defects should have showed by now.

I have an 03 as well, good truck changed ICP and pigtail two weeks ago for a rough idle. Runs good I only have 57K on it though. I had a surging issue till I plugged the EGR flow. Other than those two, no issues.
