How Can I improve MPG? What is the avg ?

I have a 2004 f250 with around 39,000 miles. when i first purchased the truck i took it down to gulf shores ala. from Indianapolis, In. I was getting about 23 mpg!!! No kidding. Normal driving i would avg 18mpg I then took the truck in for a service bulletin update which they installed a new metal tube on the cooler and reprogrammed. any way since then I get about 17 mpg avg and have installed a superchips flashpaq programmer. What else can I do to get better mpg and with little cost. Also what do most other members get MPG with there 6.0L . Thanks

welcome to the Org bud... most will tell you that 17mpg is very damn good.... also is this hand calculated?

lil cheap things you can do to get better MPG is keep your filters clean... this includes your air and fuel filter... make sure your tires are properly inflated... the biggest factor is your right foot...

now if your willing to spend some money a 4" TB exhaust will create less restriction esp if you elliminate the cat and exhaust... and i would highly suggest a custom tuned SCT xcal 3 with an econo tune....

let us know if you have any other questions and welcome

-Raul

I have a 2003 6.0L and avg. 17 city and highway combined. Hand Calculated. See sig. For mods. The 17 avg is before the exhaust. Installing that this weekend.

17.2 avg right now with city and some city highways. 16/24 is what you can get. not much more than that.

I would also look into putting a intake on it. If money is tight, I would custom make one. Not very hard, napa sells long and round filters that have a 4 inch opening!

That's a better idea than a Foam filter. my 2 cents. I hate foam filters.

I just went down to North Carolina and on the way down with the cruise set at 70 i was getting just under 21 mpg. I then had to hit the hills of WV and thru Va back up to New England (going pretty good as i had to get home to go to work in the am) I was getting 19.8
I didnt think that was to bad at all. Oh yeah all stock too

Box stock, with a 06 F350 CC/dually, I'm seeing around 16-17 mixed city/hwy, if I don't count the steep hill I have to pull coming out of my house, it's around 18. Back in the cheap gas days, when I wasn't paying attention, I was seeing around 12.8. That's a 30% improvement that comes purely from adjusting driving style.

The big one was the right foot. Easy on the starts, never over 10psi boost, and if you see a red light 100 yards up, take your foot off the gas and let it coast. Also adjusted my drive to miss rush hour traffic, leave half an hour earlier, leave work half an hour earlier. That really helped. Funny thing is, I timed my commute with my slower driving style. Carefree, it was 28 minutes. Careful, it's 32 minutes, and I save about a gallon of fuel. Let's see, $4.50 for four minutes, that comes out to around $70 an hour. Pretty good pay for driving slow.

On the highway, drafting a box trailer semi is good for 2mpg @ 70. I don't drive to lunch any more, walk instead. That helped some, cuts down the city driving. Just think about the money in your pocket, that'll put a smile on your face.

I think someone should come up with exhaust stacks shaped like a dollar sign on the end. When they blow smoke, it will look very realistic.
