Exhaust Options

Hey guys,

I have seen alot of you taking your catalytic converters off, what type of hp/torque gains are you getting from doing that and what are you putting in place of it? Also, does the computer notice when you do so? Any downsides to this?

Also, I was wondering if anybody has any dyno test information on all the Turbo back exhausts on the market, no one biased, just an independant test.

Thanks,
Cmcdaniel

I don't have tests.

What year is your truck? If you plan on avoiding warranty problems, get an exhaust WITH a muffler AND cat. Also, there is a problem that sometimes occurs when straight piping the 6.0. It sometimes throws a code, which doesn't really mean much, but a code nonetheless. Some trucks exp. this while others do not.

Furthering the exhaust info, I'd suggest a brand name IE: Mbrp, MagnaFlow and Banks especially when using a cat and muffler. If you're just straight piping it, you may find a straight thru off brand system for cheaper but the install isn't gauranteed to be easy.

Exhaust on these diesels aren't a whole lot of HP gain, they are more of a supporting mod for something like a CHIP because it really lowers EGT's. Also a FYI, you don't need an intake on your truck, the stock one is marvelous!

My truck is an 06' F250 crewcab FX4 shortbed. I would definetely get a full system with a cat but I was just wondering if there was a huge gain when you take them off. I don't want any codes, I'll just hang with the cat.

I would most likely either cut a reputable brand name muffler in or buy a cat-back system from Banks. I am not a straight pipe hammerhead, my neighbors hate me enough as it is when I fire my truck up at 5:00am.

I know I don't need an intake, I didn't need this truck, nor did I need the Flashpaq but I had to get one.

If you are going to get an exhaust system, I would get the whole system, Turbo back. You will see more gain dollar for dollar if you do. Also, if in the future, you plan on doing more, you will already have the new down pipe in place. I just don't personally see a whole lot of point in the cat back system. But thats just my opinion.

Explain to me why you think a new turbo down pipe is worth more dollar for dollar? I talked to Banks and the turbo back system is about a grand and just the cat-back in just over 600 bucks?

i just took my cat off yesterday and had a piece welded in place cost 20 bucks and 15 minutes. i really like it there is not much more whistle at idle but you can hear it when accelerating. the turbo has about 1/10 of the lag it had before which i like alot.

You will get about 400hp and 900tq.

Out of all honesty, I dont think it makes huge difference. You can get a cat delete pipe that will replace that cat with just a straight piece of pipe.

As for turbo-back, go with the MBRP Turbo Back. Seems everyone has only good things to say about it. It is going to be one of my next upgrades along with muffler and cat delete pipes

Thats because you spoke with Banks.

Talk to one of the sponsers on this site, they are great guys.

A Turbo Back MBRP should run under $600.

A stock DP is what 3.5"? Well the bends are all kinky and not efficent at exiting air. An aftermarket 3.5DP or a 4" DP will be much better because they have smoother bends so they flow better.

You'll be happier with a full system unless you just do a cat delete (since it's really cheap). After this though you have to worry about 1. The possible code 2. Legality of it and 3. Ford will give you a hard time in the future on warranty work if they're like 75% of the other dealers in America trying to escape 6.0 warranties.

I know there are specials going on and that exhausts are on the list for the 6.0 guys. Really cheap (less then the 600 stated above)! You may want to check out the vendor area.

Yeah Banks makes a good product, don't get me wrong, but dang, they are very, very, very proud of them. They are twice as proud as anybody else. I would not even pay a grand if they had a bunch of faries that came with it and installed it for you. Get an MBRP, or something like that from one of the sponsors, they will get you the best product and get you a deal on it.
